When I read Catherine Marshall’s first book, A Man Called Peter, it changed my life’s direction. I learned about the prayer of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane: “Not my will, but Yours be done” (Luke 22:42) when she wrote extensively about this theme of her husband’s life. I then collected and read all of Marshall’s books. I connected with her other autobiographies, which she wrote after the death of her husband. I was encouraged by Catherine’s obedience to God. After my difficult divorce, I read them again, resonating with the loneliness of her widowhood and her financial struggle as a single parent. Like Catherine, I am grateful to God that I have had the opportunity to mature spiritually and emotionally through many difficult circumstances of my life. I have come to realise through these trials, that God has been irrevocably faithful to me. Unlike Catherine, I have not remarried. I have had many struggles to navigate as a single person, which have been very difficult to go through. However, as a gifted author, she inspired me to write my life story, a journey I have undertaken over many years. Rejection and the resulting redemption through God’s grace, mercy, love and forgiveness have become the central themes of my life. Having held on to God through many trials, I know that He has cared for me and guided me through all of them. I no longer regret the past for the significant growth towards Christian maturity, and the true sense of identity that I have found in Christ. I believe that God has blessed me abundantly for remaining faithful to Him. The total submission of my life to His will has not only helped me to survive on my own, it has been an exciting journey. My hope is that in reading my story, readers may come to know God more intimately, and that they might have the courage to be able to overcome their own emotional pain by trusting Him. I have also interwoven my life story with the six Stages of Faith. At the end of seven chapters, the self-reflection questions are designed to help readers to consider their own emotional and spiritual journey. This text may be used for group discussion and is suitable for women’s Bible study groups.
