What really matters?
Does it surprize you that the better part is sitting at the feet of Jesus listening to His teaching? It is better, certainly, than being anxious and troubled, or distracted with service, but even eating a meal? ....Yes, even better than the meal she was preparing.
In the Gospel of John, in Chapter Six, Jesus had just fed 5,000 the day before. Many of them wanted to see Jesus again, but he had disappeared. They had the idea that he had somehow crossed the sea of Galilee, so they got into boats and went after Him. When they found Him, they asked Him how he got there, and Jesus said, "Truly, truly, I say to you, you seek me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life...." (John 6:26-27)
Each one of us must ask ourselves why we would seek Jesus. What is it about Him that feeds us? What is it that we want to be fed? Mary had chosen the better part. She was being fed by Jesus. She was being fed so well that nothing else mattered, at least, not the distraction of serving a meal.
"Seek the Lord while He may be found, call upon him while he is near” (Isaiah 55:6). Feed upon the resources that truly give life, that give life to your soul. This is the better part. "For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and return not there until they have watered the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not retum to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it" (Isaiah 55:10-11). But, it can't accomplish much if it remains unknown. We cannot truly receive the bread of life if we never come to Christ, if we never receive the gift of truth that only Christ can give. He said, "l am the bread of life; they who come to me shall not hunger, and they who believe in me shall never thirst." (John 6:35)
Spend time sitting at the feet of Jesus listening to His teaching. This will feed your soul, this will nourish your spirit, this will enhance your life in such a way that you will grow in faith, you will be strengthened in wisdom, you will begin to know even the thoughts of God. This is what really matters!

Jesus came to the home of Mary and Martha. Martha busied herself with preparing and serving a meal, while Mary sat at the feet of Jesus listening to His teaching.
When Martha suggested Jesus should tell her to help prepare the meal, He told her that Mary was choosing the better part.
