CHAPTER 1: The Promise of a Seeker "For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost." (Luke 19:10) Have you ever been truly lost? Not just momentarily disoriented in a shopping mall or turned around on an unfamiliar road, but genuinely, frighteningly lost? The kind of lost where panic rises in your throat and every direction looks the same? That visceral memory captures something profound about the human condition. We are all, spiritually speaking, like lost sheep. King David confessed this truth honestly: "I have strayed like a lost sheep. Seek your servant, for I have not forgotten your commands" (Psalm 119:176). Notice the paradox. He acknowledges being lost yet claims to remember God's commands. How can someone be lost and still know the way? This is the peculiar nature of spiritual lostness—we often know what we should do, where we should be, yet find ourselves wandering nonetheless. Into this universal human predicament, Jesus declares His mission with stunning clarity: "The Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost." Not to judge. Not to condemn. His fundamental purpose was to seek—to actively, intentionally, persistently search for those who have wandered away from their true home. But this seeking mission didn't begin with Jesus' birth in Bethlehem. Seven hundred years earlier, Isaiah received visions painting a portrait of a Seeker whose love would drive Him to the ultimate sacrifice. "We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all." (Isaiah 53:6) The ancient promise is this: no matter how lost you are, no matter how long you've wandered, there is a Seeker who specializes in finding people exactly like you. His name was promised seven centuries before His birth. And when He finally arrived, the first words He would speak in public ministry would be: "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing."

Written in a warm, accessible voice, every chapter includes deep reflection questions, a practical weekly challenge, and a closing prayer—making it equally powerful for personal devotion or group discussion. Readers will be moved, challenged, and ultimately changed by the realization that the Seeker has not stopped seeking. He is still looking for people exactly like them.
About the Author
George Goodwyn Jr. is a husband, father, homebuilder, and real estate developer based in Montgomery, Alabama. He and his wife are the parents of a blended family with six children and seven grandchildren (and still counting). His heart for the lost extends beyond the page. George has led a Bible study men’s group at work, and a small group, Faith To Find The Best Job, and is actively involved in his local church. He also serves as a volunteer with Promise International, a faith-based nonprofit supporting children with special needs in Uganda. His involvement here and there—marked by both financial stewardship and personal presence—has deepened his conviction that the seeking mission of Jesus is meant to be lived, not merely studied. Why Jesus Came: Seeking the Lost grew out of a 24-session Bible study on Luke 15:24 and represents George’s deep belief that every person who has ever felt lost, overlooked, or beyond reach needs to know that the Seeker came for them specifically. It is his prayer that every reader would encounter that truth—not merely as a doctrine, but as a lived reality.
