Observations I believe to be true: - I have never met anyone who said they had wished they had delayed becoming a Christian. I have never heard someone say that they wish they could have lived the way they had wanted to for longer before accepting Jesus as their personal Savior. Everyone I have ever met who is a Christian has said they wish they had started following Jesus much earlier in their lives. - John 10:10 (NKJV) “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” Most Christians don’t seem to be living an abundant life. - Generous people seem to live an abundant life; they seem to have more joy, peace, and contentment. Contrarily, the greedy person or ungenerous person always seems to be complaining, full of worry, and causing problems. - I have never met a Christian who regretted giving to their local church. I have never heard them say that they wished that they could get their money back. (I’m sure they exist, but I have never met them.) - Follow the money, and you can usually tell what someone’s motives are and what they truly treasure in their hearts. - We should not think that we have to give under compulsion or that we are giving to get something in return. We should be thankful that we get to give because we have already gotten. - I don’t believe anyone in Heaven will be boasting about their possessions on earth. But I do believe that they will know and see how well their eternal investments paid off. Questions I personally have about money? - Do I worry about money too much? - Do I really believe that what I have God gave to me? - What do I really treasure? Do my actions show it? - Am I honoring God in all that I do and with my finances? - What example am I setting for those I love when it comes to money? - Do I trust God with my finances? - Will God approve of how I have handled the resources He has entrusted me with? - Can and should I enjoy the things I buy that are not needed and sometimes frivolous? - Do I praise God for what He has done for me when it comes to producing an income? - Is my identity defined by worldly success and money? - If God told me to give all the money I have away and trust Him for the future, would I? - Am I envious of extremely wealthy people and what their money can buy? - Am I greedy? - Do I defraud laborers of their wages? - How much should I give? - Where should I give? - How much is enough? - Do I have enough to retire on? - Should I completely retire and stop producing an income? - Should I plan to leave my children an inheritance? If so, how much? - Should I give to my local Church or another worthy organization? What holds people/myself back from trusting God with their/my finances: - It’s my money. I worked hard for it. I earned it. It’s mine. - I don’t think I have enough. - I need or want other things. - I don’t trust the church to administer my donations properly. - The local church is too concerned about how big and beautiful their buildings are, and they overpay their staff and pastor. - All the church does is talk about money. - If people worked as hard as I did, they wouldn’t need my money. - I want the power and prestige that come with more money. - I need to save up for college, retirement, a second house, a boat, etc. - I’m not sure how long I am going to live, so I need as much as possible for old age. - I want to leave my children an inheritance. - I like the feeling of security I have when I have extra money. - I trust myself. I'm not sure that God and I are on the same page. - I am judgmental when it comes to why others have financial problems. - Satan has blinded my eyes and hardened my heart. - I give to other worthy organizations. Why would The Lord want us to bring the tithe to the Church? 1. Because He said so. 2. “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” 3. Because we care about others. 4. Because when we give to our local church, our hearts will naturally tend to follow where the Treasure goes. We will be more involved, committed to, and believe in the purpose of the Church. 5. An act that shows we trust God in our finances. 6. Shows what we value and who we honor. 7. The Church has funds to now reach and save the lost. Can you think of any better way? 8. When everyone comes together, more can be done together than separately. 9. Jesus and His Church get the credit and recognition. 10. Generous people are happier and have more joy. The nongiver is usually the biggest complainer and a troublemaker. 11. What better way to show and teach your children what is important. 12. Because of the promise that comes with it: “…see if I don’t open up heaven itself to you and pour out blessings beyond your wildest dreams.” 13. How much better would this country or any country be if the Church had enthusiastic members and had at least 4 times as much to operate with? There wouldn’t need to be a welfare or social security system. (The average American church going Christian only gives 2.4% of their income to charity. A typical American gives on average 1.8% to charity.) 14. There is no better alternative. God’s way is always the Best. 15. Eventually, we want to hear: “Well done, good and faithful servant!”

George Goodwyn, Jr., knows what it’s like to be controlled by money. For years, he worked seven days a week as a self-employed affordable home builder, checking his bank balance multiple times daily and living in perpetual fear of not having enough. He called himself a Christian, but when it came to his finances, he was firmly in control—or so he believed. That changed fifteen years ago when his future wife, Sarah, issued an ultimatum that would transform his life: “Tithing isn’t negotiable for me.” Barely surviving financially, the idea of giving away 10% before paying anything else seemed insane. But George was desperate enough to try. What began as reluctant obedience became one of the three most important decisions of his life. God didn’t make George rich, but He freed him from the anxiety, stress, and slavery that money had created. The constant checking of bank accounts stopped. The seven-day work week ended. The fear dissolved. Today, George leads a Tuesday morning Bible study for men in the construction industry, which helped create this devotional.
