Chapter 36

December 16

7pm

James Miesner turned onto the highway toward his home. The December sky was moonless with a sinister look about it. Miesner thought to himself that the bleak sky fit his current mood. All day long he had been rehashing his conversation with Harold Mason the day before. He felt like the walls were closing in on him and he had to do something in order to rectify the situation. He drove on into the gloomy night weighing his options. He was well aware that everyone involved in this scheme would not survive until the end. It appeared to him that it was coming down to ‘every man for himself’.

Miesner continued on until he reached a familiar curve in the road. At almost ninety degrees, the turn could be dangerous for a driver not paying attention. Being very familiar with this road, he approached the curve without slowing down as much as he should have. The curve rounded an embankment with a thirty meter drop down a jagged hillside. Miesner touched his brakes to begin slowing his SUV. A chill raced down his spine as he felt the sponginess of his brakes. He pressed harder on the pedal without any success. What’s going on? he thought as the guard rail was closing in on him. He was travelling faster than he should have been, going into this curve. He put his foot to the floor to no avail and screamed as he broke through the guard rail and plummeted down the jagged embankment.

Harold Mason picked up his phone, “What?”

“It’s done,” said the voice on the other end.

Mason clicked off his phone and slowly placed it on his desk. He stared straight ahead emotionless.
