Finding Home

It is almost summer time and Jim “The Man’s” clutch of baby chicks – Maggie and Lila’s charges – are almost full-grown chickens. One day, as Jim “The Man” is taking a close look-and-see in his chicken yard, he notices, there at the gate, under the very bottom rung is Oreo! Jim’s heart sinks in his chest as he lets out a sigh, because he knows this is Maggie and Lila’s favorite pet. Oreo is “spread chicken” on his back, in the dirt, visibly not moving. Jim’s heart will not let him believe that Oreo is dead, although his mind is trying to tell him this is so. Instead, Jim “The Man” cups his warm hands around Oreo. Three minutes pass. He waits and feels a beat of Oreo’s little heart. He can feel beating, beating in his hands. Jim can actually feel Oreo’s heart beating! Jim holds Oreo a little longer – Oreo is alive!
