The rhythmic sound of his horse's hoof beats was muffled by the rustle of the crowd, but nothing could dim the light that always radiated from Word and yet shone upon him. His armor glinted and flashed swords of light that made those watching shade their eyes. The rich copper colour of his hair was deepened by the glorious light , and his face was so beaurifully wise and altogether lovely that as he came near and pulled up his horse, an awe filled hush fell over the crowd.
How beautiful he is, thought Heart. When I see him and listen to his messages, I always feel so close to the King. I guess it's because Word always comes from being with King Vine and brings his Presence with him.
Word dismounted and held up his hand to indicate he was about to speak.
The crowd, now hushed, breathed as one. Each pair of eyes fastened on Word, and every ear strained to hear Word's message. Everone's thoughts were focused on the promise of treasure they could gain for themselves. Treasure that would change their lives.
Finally, Word began to speak. "I know what is uppermost in all of your minds - finding treasure. And I have come to tell you that, yes, the rumours you have heard are true. There is indeed treasure hidden in Eternal City - beautiful, priceless treasure!"
A roar erupted, expressing the excited enthusiasm of the crowd. Word waited until everyone's attention was once more riveted on him, and then he continued, "Anyone desiring to search for this treasure may have one of my treasure maps." As he spoke, Word held up the bundle of maps he had brought with him.
Instantly, the crowd surged forward, everyone reaching, pushing to be among the first to receive a map. They were ready to begin their search for hidden treasure immediately, hoping to gain the advantage of a head start.
Heart watched, somewhat dismayed at the people's frenzied impatience to get their hands on one of Word's maps. What was it she read in so many of the faces ... was it the same longing she felt deep within her to know and follow the King? Or was it greed focused on satisfying selfish desires?
