Sammy saw Mr. Fox at the edge of the woods. His tail was giving the signal to Sammy that he was needed and to come quick! Sammy knew there was a problem in the deep woods.
Sammy went as fast as he could and was soon standing in front of Mr. Fox. “Is one of the animals in trouble?” asked Sammy.
Mr. Fox was very serious when he answered, “The entire deep woods could be in trouble, and I’m very concerned. Mr. Owl was told by Mr. Crow that humans were just outside of the woods and looking for a way to get in. They had large sticks under their arms. Sammy, we must think of a way to keep them out.”
Sammy asked the animals to gather round him. The animals knew from the tone of his voice that he was going to tell them something important.
“What I am about to tell you is not to scare you. Recently we have heard that humans may enter the deep woods to hunt. It is time we have a plan to keep humans with guns out.”
“What do you want us to do Sammy?” asked Mr. Bear. “What plan do you have?”
Sammy continued, “Each one of you has a way of protecting yourself. Tell me what you do Mr. Bear?”
Mr. Bear looked at Sammy and proudly told him, “I stand on my back legs and growl. I open my mouth and show my teeth. I shake my head back and forth when I’m real mad! I paw the ground. Oh, I scare myself just thinking about it!”

About the Book
You are about to enter the deep woods, where Sammy the skunk becomes a hero to the animals that live there. Although Sammy does not live in the deep woods he enters it quite by accident, and his adventures begin immediately.
In book five, Sammy wakens to warmer weather after a long winter. Mrs. Groundhog is missing. Miss Deer has a special surprise for all her animal friends. Sammy has a plan to keep humans out of the deep woods.
Life lessons are written for each of the three stories in this book. They include a question for children to think about, a scripture verse, a truth about God, and a short message about the love God has for His children.
About the Author
Adele A. Roberts has a BA in education, an MA in counseling, and a CDA in early childhood development. She created the character of Sammy more than forty years ago, when she began telling her make-believe stories to her students. She started writing the first story of Sammy when a student asked if there was a book about the little skunk who frequented her tales. Although it wasn’t a priority to write stories at the time, Adele finished part of the first story and set it aside. Years later, she found the old cardboard box containing the aged, colored papers of her first story. She then realized she needed to complete the task she had begun so many years before.
Kathy Holland has a BFA in painting from Virginia Commonwealth University. All illustrations in this book were done with colored pencils.
