Sammy asked the little puppy, “Do you know how to follow a scent?”
Little Shadow looked a little embarrassed and answered, “I don’t know what you are talking about.”
“I’ll teach you,” said Sammy. “First, close your eyes. I’m going to hide. When I tell you to open your eyes, see if you can smell where I went. Put your nose close to the ground and begin to sniff. I shouldn’t be very hard for you to find!”
Sammy walked around the inside of the barn, went outside, came back in and hid behind a barn door. “Okay, Shadow, open your eyes and let your nose tell you where to go.”
Little Shadow began his search. It wasn’t long before he shouted, “I know where you are!” His tail began to wag and he barked at Sammy who was behind the barn door. “I found you. That wasn’t hard at all. Is that what you call following a scent?”
Sammy laughed, “Well, it’s easy to follow MY scent! Now the hard part is that you must find your own path back to your new home by sniffing the ground and following your own scent. You can also look for your tracks. Do you think you can do that? I’ll go along with you in case you may need some help.”
Sammy was happy to be with Shadow. As they walked together Sammy noticed they were the same size. Sammy felt he had made a friend that was quite different from him. Shadow was a dog, an animal that needed to be cared for by humans. Sammy was a wild animal who could survive quite nicely by himself. Sammy had been warned about dogs from books he had read. As he looked at Shadow he couldn’t help but think that perhaps there was a chance that a domestic animal and a wild animal could get along nicely.

About the Book
You are about to enter the deep woods where Sammy the skunk becomes a hero to the animals that live there. Although Sammy does not live in the deep woods, he enters it quite by accident and his adventures begin immediately.
Book six is the last in the series of The Adventures of Sammy the Skunk. In book six, Sammy discovers a little lost dog named Shadow and a very large dog named Brutus. Sammy sees humans for the first time. Sammy and Mr. Fox become friends with Shadow and Brutus, and a plan is made for them to meet.
Life lessons are written for each of the three stories in this book. They include a question for children to think about, a scripture verse, a truth about God, and a short message about the love God has for His children.
About the Author
Adele A. Roberts has a BA in education, MA in counseling and a CDA in early childhood development. She created the character of Sammy over forty years ago and began telling her make-believe stories to her students. She started writing the first story of Sammy when a young student asked if there was a book about the little skunk. Although it wasn’t a priority of hers at the time to write stories, she finished part of the first story and set it aside. Years later she found the old cardboard box containing the aged, colored papers of her first story. It was at this time she realized she needed to complete the task she had begun so many years before.
Kathy Holland has a BFA in painting from Virginia Commonwealth University. All illustrations in this book were done with colored pencils.
