Chapter One

Opal Meets a Fairy

There was a little girl named Opal Rose and like most little girls she loved to play dress up. She especially liked dressing up as a princess. She played for hours and hours and never tired of pretending to be a princess.

She even dreamed about being a princess when she slept.

One night Opal Rose had been tucked into bed and was drifting off to sleep when suddenly she heard a THUMP and saw a flickering light. She sat straight up in bed, rubbing her eyes.

She said, “Oh my, what was that?”

Peeking over the side of her bed she saw the strangest sight. Lying on the floor was a little fairy. The fairy had a pixie haircut with a small shiny star just above her right ear. She wore a bright yellow tutu covered with sparkles and sequins and on her feet were turquoise slippers with a star on each toe. Her wings had every color from the rainbow in them and were also covered in sparkles. The fairy sat up, rubbing her head. Opal Rose decided the fairy was much too cute to be afraid.

Rubbing her eyes again to be sure she wasn’t seeing things, Opal Rose asked, “Who are you?” The little fairy answered “My name is Sparkle Star. You may call me Sparky if you’d like. I’m from Wondervilla and I’m on a very important mission. I was in such a hurry that I flew right into the wall.

Sparky held up her magic wand “Oops!! I bent my wand, but not to worry. It stills works.” She tapped it twice, and the room was filled with magic fairy dust.

Opal Rose could see that the magic wand was indeed still blinking, “Wow! That is so cool! Can you do it again Sparky?” she asked.

“Later,” answered Sparky, “I must tell you why I’ve come to see you. Do you know who Princess Gabriella of Wondervilla is?”

“Of course,” answered Opal Rose, “I’ve never seen her, but every little girl knows who Princess Gabriella is.”

“Well you see, you look very much like the Princess.” explained Sparky, Still a little sleepy and confused Opal Rose asked,” Me? I look like the Princess?”

“Yes, it is amazing! Now about the special request,” answered Sparky. “Tomorrow is Wondervilla’s Grand Ball and Festival. They are very special events and everyone so looks forward to seeing the Princess. But the Princess has the measles and is much too sick to attend.

“The Queen sent me to ask if you would be so kind as to fill in for the sick Princess.” Opal Rose was very excited. For one whole day she would wear the Princess’ beautiful gowns and tiaras. She would ride in a beautiful carriage through all of Wondervilla. Everyone would cheer and toss flowers.

It would be such an exciting adventure. How could Opal Rose refuse?

“First” said Opal Rose, “I must ask permission. I must obey my parents even when I don’t like their answer. I hope they will say yes!” Opal Rose knew that if her parents didn’t agree that she would not be able to go. She knew that her parents always want what’s best for her.

“You are right, we must get permission first,” agreed Sparkle Star.

Not wanting to wake her brothers, Noah and Abel, she tiptoed quietly past their room as Sparky flew behind her. Slowly she opened the door to her parents’ room.

“Oh Mommy and Daddy,” cried Opal Rose excitedly, “I have a very important question to ask. Please, please say yes!” Her parents startled from a sound sleep sat up in bed. Her mother blinked her eyes and her father scratched his head.

“Permission! ! Permission for what?” asked her mother.

Staring at Sparky her father asked “And who are you?”

“OOPS! I forgot my manners “ said Sparky. “My name is Sparkle Star and I’m a fairy from Wondervilla. We have an extreme emergency, and Opal Rose is our only hope to save the day.”

“Wait a minute. You are going too fast, now we are even more confused,” muttered her father, still half asleep.
