CHAPTER ONE
CHARLIE HAS A VISITOR
It was a bright summer day as Farmer Jones and Mr. Slaphappy walked toward the old barn. Farmer Jones pulled on the big door once, twice, and finally the third time it began to open. The hinges on the old barn door squeaked loudly.
“Goodness gracious!” He exclaimed, “I don’t think this door has been opened in ten, maybe twenty years.”
Mr. Slaphappy was so excited. Sitting somewhere in this old barn was a 1956 Chevrolet that he wanted to buy.
He had looked high and low, here and there, he had looked everywhere. At last he found the car of his dreams. Well, one of the many cars of his dreams. “Where is the car?” asked Mr. Slaphappy.
“I think I parked him over in the corner,” answered Farmer Jones.
Sure enough, there was a cover over some big object sitting in a corner.
Mr. Slaphappy didn’t wait for Farmer Jones to catch up to him. He ran over and jerked the cover off.
“Hey!!! What’s going on? I was sleeping!!” sputtered Charlie Chevy, blinking his eyes against the bright sunlight now shining in the barn. The men didn’t respond. They could not hear Charlie.
“Cough, cough,” he choked out as the dust settled from the old cover.
“Oh my!” said Mr. Slaphappy. Slowly he walked around Charlie Chevy. He peeked inside the window, ran his hand down the fender.
“Careful, Dude, that tickles,” chuckled Charlie Chevy.
Farmer Jones looked over the old car with great affection. “He was a good old boy, faithfully started day after day. Carried my family everywhere we wanted to go.
“Yes siree, he’s just like a member of the family,” exclaimed Farmer Jones.
Mr. Slaphappy continued to check out the old car. He kicked one of Charlie Chevy’s tires. “Ouch!” shouted Charlie Chevy. “That hurts!”
Mr. Slaphappy kicked another tire. “Ouch,” shouted Charlie.
He kicked the other two tires. “Ouch! Ouch,” cried Charlie. “How would you like it if I ran over your foot, mister?”
“Well Farmer Jones, how much money do you want for this old car?” asked Mr. Slaphappy, with the emphasis on OLD.
Farmer Jones affectionately ran his hand down Charlie Chevy’s fender. “I don’t rightly know,” he answered. “How do you put a price on a faithful friend?” This was more of a question to himself than an answer for Mr. Slaphappy.
“What are your plans for this great car?” asked Farmer Jones.
“I want to restore him to his original splendor and take him to car shows and win trophies. He will be treated like royalty, just like all my other cars, answered Mr. Slaphappy.
I must be careful or Farmer Jones will know how much I want this car and he might ask a BIG price, thought Mr. Slaphappy.
Of course that is not the way Farmer Jones thought at all. When you love something or someone you always want the best for him.
Being a very wise man farmer Jones knew that it would be best for Charlie Chevy to be a show car than to sit in an old barn.
So they agreed on a price and made arrangements to transport Charlie Chevy to his new home.

About the Author
As a young mother, I told my children stories. Now as a grandmother to fourteen children, plus a great-grandmother to five, I still love to tell stories. I began writing in 2003. Each of my stories has a valuable lesson based on Christian principles. These stories encourage children to grin, giggle, and grow.
