The Alabaster Jar
(Luke 7:36-50)
When the dinner invitation came,
and I was told that Jesus would be there,
I knew I had to be there, too.
I took the alabaster jar of perfume with me.
It was meant for Him alone…
mixed in with the perfume was my sin –
that ugly deed that the whole town knew about.
Jesus was reclining,
and I knelt down behind Him at His feet.
Did He even know I was there?
I desperately needed to be free.
My tears of shame trickled down my cheeks
and washed His dusty, dirty feet.
When my tears were spent,
I kissed His feet,
and I dried His feet with my hair.
Then I took the lid off the alabaster jar,
and the sweet fragrance mingled with the meal –
My sin was once again revealed.
Then I poured out the perfume,
my sin, and my shame
over His precious feet,
and He just sat there.
He knew me.
He knew my sin.
And yet He didn’t flinch at my ugliness.
As I washed Him,
He washed over me,
setting me free.
