Idols

Man loves his toys

And the Word of God says:

The idols speak deceit, diviners see visions that lie; they tell dreams that are false, they give comfort in vain. Therefore the people wander like sheep oppressed for lack of a shepherd. Zechariah 10:2

Ok…ok! So this is a negative sounding verse from the Bible, but it speaks the truth, especially for the times that we are currently experiencing. When times get tough, people will try to find comfort in most anything. When times are good, they go out buy more idols. “Idols” are the man made objects that entice us to spend time with them thinking that comfort will come.

Idols are any “things” that we put before our relationship with others (spouse, children, family, etc., and especially God.) But “idols” rust, rot, wear out, corrode, get dirty, and become old and unattractive. Idols lie to us about providing comfort…they don’t! Idols for a man are his toys. You have heard the not-so-far-from-the-truth that the only difference between men and boys are the size of their toys. Men become enamored with “toys”. Some men always have to have the latest and greatest. This usually spells disaster from a financial point of view.

If you think for a moment, you know what “diviners” are…news media, stock market analysts, politicians, and even our “Uncle Jim’s and Aunt Sue’s” will kick in with “visions and dreams.” We seek out those who will say what we want to believe thinking that this brings us comfort. But all of these things “give comfort in vain.” Another way of putting this is that they give false hope. The world and the things of the world ALWAYS have and ALWAYS will give false hope. I think it’s time that you reread Chapter 1 about TRUTH.

People who want to make you “feel” better have good intentions, but they deliver the wrong message. Some people may actually tell you the “truth”, but they don’t believe it themselves…so it gives you false hope. What is the real and true comfort and hope for people today? Jesus Christ, the Great Shepherd. We are all like sheep, distracted, gullible, easily led astray, helpless, defenseless…always looking for that “greener” pasture.

This is a major problem for men today. We wander around with a ton of weight on us, because the world has said, “Do this, buy that, and your life will be one of comfort and hope for the future.” Hog Wash!!
