About the Book
Slow, Steady, Strong is a story I never planned to write, but God had a different plan. What began as Facebook updates to family and friends became a testimony of faith, grief, caregiving, loss, healing, and learning how to keep moving forward when life changes in ways you never expected. In these pages, I share the heartbreaking loss of my daughter, Sarah, after her battle with COVID-19, the courage she showed through Multiple Sclerosis, my own health struggles, and the journey of caring for my wife, Mary, as she faced the beast called colon cancer. This is not a book written from theory. It is written from hospital rooms, cemetery visits, sleepless nights, hard prayers, and quiet moments when God reminded me He was still there. It is about learning that grief is real, faith is necessary, family and friends matter, and God’s grace is enough for the next step. You may laugh. You may cry. You may see part of your own story in mine. Most of all, I pray you will be reminded that you are not alone, that healing cannot be rushed, and that even when life is hard, God never fails. Take your time. Trust His timing. Keep walking. Slow. Steady. Strong.
About the Author
For most of my life, I thought I had a pretty good idea of what the future would look like. Mary and I would grow old together, enjoy our family, and watch our children and grandchildren build their own lives. We even built a home on the Holston River where our family could be together. But God had a different plan, and that plan took me down a road I never expected to travel. Today, I live in East Tennessee, far from the California sunshine where so much of my story began. My son, Jason, and our family have walked this road with me through joy, loss, laughter, tears, and all the changes that come with life. These days, you will often find me at Gibbs Elementary, where the kiddos simply call me Mr. James. I wear a small sea turtle bracelet on my wrist as a reminder of Sarah, of Mary, and of the truth that we keep moving forward—slow, steady, and strong. Slow, Steady, Strong is my first book. It began as real-time posts written during some of the hardest days of my life, but God used those words to show me something bigger. This book is not written from a place of having everything figured out. It is written from the valley, from hospital rooms, from quiet nights, from cemetery visits, and from the steady assurance that God was with me through it all. If you are walking through your own dark valley, I want you to know what God has shown me again and again: you are not alone, your story is not over yet, and with His help you can keep moving forward—slow, steady, and strong.
