From “How Sweet the Sound”: Amazing grace, how sweet the sound! These are words I’ve heard countless times in the span of my lifetime. There is no telling how many times the song has been sung since first published in 1779. If we think of all the people who have sung, played, listened to, or been influenced by this song, it is likely to be in the millions. The song even makes its way into secular realms at times! But as I pondered the words the other day, I began to think, what is this sweet sound Newton was talking about? What is the sound of grace? I started thinking of the possibilities. Maybe it is the sound of a small child praying his life over to Jesus. Maybe it is the plaintive, desperate plea of the addict. Or maybe it is the criminal, destined to die, who cries out with his last breath. Maybe it is the sound of chains breaking or burdens lifted. Those may be sweet sounds, all right. But these are not the sounds of grace, are they? No, I think not. The sound of grace is when Jesus Himself hears each pleading cry and answers, “Yes, my child.” The sound is accompanied by His hand, reaching. It’s accompanied by His heart, accepting. His Spirit, filling. And, though maybe not audible to us, it’s joined by the sound of angels’ wings, victorious over the powers of darkness in that very moment – and singing, surely there is singing. Yes, truly a sweet, sweet sound.

About the Author
Sherry Miller is a West Tennessee native and retired banker. She has enjoyed writing since she was a child. Sherry currently resides in Lexington, Tennessee with Dan, her husband of 49 years, and both are active in their local church. They have three married daughters. She enjoys reading, shopping, family time, and keeping up with her nine grandchildren.
