Introduction The Bible is one unified story of God's redemptive plan, unfolding across centuries through promises, prophecies, symbols, sacrifices, covenants, and historical events that ultimately find their fulfillment in Jesus Christ. Yet many believers are familiar with the New Testament accounts of Jesus while remaining less familiar with the Old Testament Scriptures that testify about Him. This 12-week study centers on one important question: How does the Old Testament bear witness to Jesus Christ? Jesus repeatedly directed people back to the Scriptures. He taught that Moses, the Prophets, and the Writings testified about Him. The apostles proclaimed that everything written beforehand pointed to God's plan of redemption fulfilled in Christ. WEEK 1 – WHAT WERE THEY MISSING? (Based on John 5:39 – The Religious Leaders Studied the Scriptures but Missed Their Central Message.) "You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about Me." (John 5:39). Understanding the Context Jesus spoke these words during a confrontation with the Jewish religious leaders after healing a man on the Sabbath. Although they devoted themselves to studying the Scriptures, they failed to recognize that those very Scriptures pointed to Him. They knew the Law of Moses. They studied the Prophets. They treasured the sacred writings. Yet they missed the One to whom all those writings testified. Jesus was not criticizing their devotion to Scripture. He was exposing the tragedy of reading the Bible without seeing its central message. Knowledge alone could not give eternal life. Eternal life is found in the One to whom the Scriptures bear witness. He then pointed specifically to Moses, saying, "If you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote of Me" (John 5:46). These statements provide the foundation for this entire study. Jesus Himself declared that the Old Testament bears God's testimony concerning His Son. Many Christians know the stories of Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, Jonah, and Daniel. They recognize familiar prophecies about the Messiah and celebrate their fulfillment in the New Testament. Yet the Bible reveals something even greater. The sacrifices, priesthood, tabernacle, feasts, covenants, kings, prophets, and historical events of the Old Testament all contribute to one unfolding story of redemption. Throughout this study, each week traces one aspect of that testimony from its Old Testament foundation to its fulfillment in Jesus Christ, revealing that the Scriptures speak with one unified voice concerning God's Son. About the Author
For more than 50 years, the author has walked with the Lord through the joys, struggles, victories, and challenges of everyday Christian life. She has been blessed with 53 years of marriage, four wonderful children, and a career teaching computers at Central Christian Academy for 25 years. As with every believer, her faith journey has had seasons of strength and seasons of struggle, yet through it all she has seen the faithful guidance of the Holy Spirit each day. Over the years, God has opened many doors for her to share His truth, encourage others, and point people back to His Word. Her prayer is that this book will touch lives, deepen understanding, and inspire readers to seek the truth of Scripture for themselves.
