Get Out of My Car! We had just arrived at our weekend apartment and had begun unpacking when I decided to go to the store for a personal item. It was dark, and I did not want to travel far. We were in a large city known for having one of the highest crime rates in America, so I asked a friend to go with me rather than venture out alone at night. Before leaving, we prayed a powerful and uplifting prayer together. Then we got into the car and drove about six blocks to a nearby store, parking along a busy street. As we stepped out of the car, I noticed how dark it was, especially near the empty space between two buildings beside the store. Inside, I found the item I needed and got in line with my friend. As I stood there, I suddenly felt prompted to get something else, so I stepped out of line, grabbed a soft drink, and returned. By then, several more people had joined the line, but I did not mind waiting. A few minutes later, I again felt impressed to leave the line and pick up another item. This time I grabbed a bag of chips and even asked my friend if she wanted one. Then I returned to the line once more. As I stood there, the Spirit of God spoke clearly to me: Someone is lying on the back seat of your car. I did not react outwardly, but immediately I understood why I had been delayed in the store. Quietly, I asked God what I should do. Should I call the police? The Lord instructed me, Do not alarm the girl with you. Do not tell her what I told you. Go to the car, fling the door open, and say, “Get out of my car! Get out of my car!” I was concerned that if my friend panicked, we could both be hurt. So I said nothing and calmly started walking toward the car. All the while, I prayed under my breath. The area between the buildings was dark, and I had no idea how many people might be involved. When we reached the car, I rushed forward, flung open the door, and shouted, “Get out of my car! Get out of my car!” At that moment, a young man jumped up from the back seat and hurried out of the car. He looked shocked that I knew he was there. Suddenly, another young man emerged from between the buildings. My friend screamed, and he yelled at her to be quiet before striking her in the face. But by then there was so much noise and commotion that their plan was disrupted. I continued shouting, “Get out of my car!” and the confusion forced them to flee. We quickly got into the car and drove home safely. Those young men intended to hijack us, and only God knows what else they had planned. But God protected us. The prayer we had prayed before leaving home covered us, and the Lord revealed the enemy’s scheme before it could be carried out. “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” — James 5:16 (KJV) “So shall they fear the name of the Lord from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun.
