About the Book
The Theology of Sonship examines how Christ reveals the Father and reestablishes human identity in a world profoundly affected by fatherlessness. Using Scripture, theology, pastoral insights, and original research, Derrick Marshall argues that fatherlessness is more than just a social problem; it is a spiritual and relational break that impacts identity, belonging, trust, and emotional development. The core message of this book is the belief that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, came not only to forgive sins but also to restore people’s relationships with the Father, enabling them to become true sons and daughters of God. Starting with the biblical depiction of God as Father, this book explores the narrative of creation, rupture, and renewal found in both the Old and New Testaments. It analyzes how fatherlessness affects multiple generations and presents a Christ-focused approach to healing, liberation, and reestablishing identity. Marshall merges theological insights with practical ministry strategies, incorporating data from a survey of participants in the El Paso region to examine the emotional, spiritual, and cultural effects of lacking a father. Written from the perspective of a pastor, husband, father, and son, The Theology of Sonship serves as both a theological exploration and a pastoral call. It encourages readers to understand that what is broken can be healed, that identity is something received rather than earned, and that in union with Christ, the wounded can discover healing, belonging, and the freedom of God’s children.
