When God Chooses And We Vote

This book grew out of a simple but pressing question: How should God’s elect think and live in a world shaken by politics, suffering, and uncertainty? In recent years, we have watched governments lurch from crisis to crisis, seen laws change almost overnight, and felt the constant pressure of headlines that suggest everything is coming apart. Many believers have responded in ways that feel understandable, but not always biblical—oscillating between political idolatry and political despair, between fear of the future and nostalgia for a past that will not return. At the same time, the doctrines that should steady us—God’s eternal election, His providential rule over rulers, His sovereignty over our sufferings, His promise of final judgment and new creation—are often either neglected, caricatured, or treated as material for debate rather than for worship and obedience. Some Christians fear that election will produce pride or fatalism. Others assume that God’s sovereignty over kings and nations makes our prayers and responsibilities irrelevant. Still others wonder how to reconcile the reality of persecution and loss with the confession that Christ already reigns and is putting His enemies under His feet. Beneath all these questions lies a deeper one: Can we really trust the God whose ways and thoughts are higher than ours? This book is my attempt, under Scripture, to answer “yes,” and to show why that answer matters in the concrete realities of life. We begin where the Bible begins—with the God who chose a people in Christ before the foundation of the world. From there we trace how His electing grace intersects with the rise and fall of rulers, the identity of believers as pilgrims and citizens of heaven, the experience of suffering under hostile powers, and the certainty of final judgment and the new creation. Along the way, we listen to voices from church history, but our primary aim is not to multiply quotations. It is to let God’s word speak plainly, and to apply it pastorally to the fears, confusions, and temptations of our present moment.
