WHY YOU SHOULD PRAY WITH YOUR SPOUSE

When you come before God whether it be you or you and your spouse, this time should always be extremely special. It should not be rushed or just done because you have been told you have to, you should want to spend time with God. Praying with your spouse is just an added joy we get to experience. So, when this time comes try to have your head in the moment, along with your heart. If you can settle these two parts of the body down, you will be able to listen and hear what your spouse is going to be saying as they open their heart up to God. When your spouse begins to pray, listen closely. Try to absorb as much as you can. Again, if you are just starting this for the first time, don’t get into an involved prayer that your spouse can’t understand or even remember most of it because of its length and complexity. Shawn and I will trade off who prays, usually I pray one night, she does the next. This allows both spouses to focus on what they want to say when they pray. It also allows you time to listen to your spouse without worrying about what you are going to be praying about, so you can relax and just listen. If you have something that is really important you both want to pray about, make sure and tell your spouse before you pray, so this is included within your prayer time for that day. As an example, it might be a prayer request someone ask you to pray for them, or someone might be ill that you both know, it could be one of you are having a health issue you would like to pray about, the options could be endless, but you know what I mean. Once you have prayed, don’t forget to talk to your spouse about his or her concerns. If you don’t understand what they were praying for, just ask them. There are going to be times when you don’t really know what they are concerned about, just like when you pray it could be the same for your spouse as well. Never end your prayer time with you and your spouse confused about the prayer or prayers offered to God. Be bold and ask them for some clarity. This is when you will start to be able to interpret what they are saying. You don’t have to be a mind reader; you just must be willing to talk about it with your spouse. This will also bring you closer to your spouse and open your lines of communication in your marriage even more.

Prayer keeps you bonded together with your spouse in such a way that you will begin to value that time each day, and we will show you this in the following chapters. Warning: This is not a quick fix to a marriage that has real issues that has been growing within the husband and wife for years, but if both spouses are willing to seriously try to show the respect to each other the way marriage was intended to be, God can do anything. This book will be a plan, outline, or some examples of how to bring you closer together with your spouse using prayer.
About the Author
Jeff Brewer is married to Shawn and lives in Festus, Missouri. They have three sons, ages thirty-eight, thirty-five, and twenty-nine. Jeff has been a born-again believer since the age of fourteen. He was baptized when he was twenty and continues to be committed to his Christian faith. He has served in many different churches over his sixty-two years of life, where he has held multiple roles. Shawn and Jeff currently attend White Flag Christian Church in St. Louis. Jeff has an associate’s degree from Jefferson College in Hillsboro, Missouri. He also has certificates from Grace World Outreach Center focusing on foundations for Christian growth and God’s plan for Christian service. He has also served as an Elder for two years at Hillsboro Christian Church. Jeff and Shawn began their ministry work by serving on multiple Lay Witness Mission trips within the Missouri and Illinois areas. They both have worked in leadership roles with youth and adults at multiple churches in Missouri. Jeff continues to be passionate about challenging men to stand up and be bold in their Christian faith and live a life that Jesus would be proud of.
