NO WORSE FOR THE WEAR

There are stories we inherit and stories we survive, and somewhere between the two we discover the truth of who we are. Mine began in the quiet corners of a childhood shaped by imagination, solitude, and the small sanctuaries I built to survive what I could not yet name. I grew up in a house where love and tension lived side by side, where silence carried weight, and where the safest places were often the ones I created myself—beneath an old Elm tree, along the cold New England shoreline, or in the wide fields beyond a rusted barbed‑wire fence.
For a long time, I believed my childhood was ordinary. Only later did I understand how much of it I spent navigating emotional fault lines, learning to read the air before I walked into a room, and finding refuge in the natural world when the human one felt too sharp. I learned early that imagination could be both a hiding place and a lifeline, and that solitude—far from being lonely—could be holy.
This is not a story told to expose or accuse. It is a story told to understand. To gather the scattered pieces of a life and hold them up to the light. To honor the child who survived, the girl who learned to disappear, the young woman who carried more than she should have, and the woman who finally learned to return to herself.
Along the way, there were people who shaped me—some with tenderness, some with wounds, some with contradictions Jesus is still unraveling. A mother whose emotions ruled the house. A father who was both a refuge and burden. A sister I adored and feared. A brother trying to simply hold on like me. And others whose actions left marks I did not fully understand until much later.
But this is also a story of God meeting me in quiet places. Of the ocean teaching me to breathe. Of animals who offered companionship when people could not. Of the long, slow work of healing. Of forgiveness that does not require reunion. Of boundaries that protect what is sacred. Of a life reclaimed.
