The Seminal Blueprint

The reason for convening the council emanated from Arius’ unorthodox beliefs concerning the divinity of the Lord Christ, which he dared to even question. A Libyan by birth, he presided at Alexandria in Egypt where he held the office of priest under the Bishop Alexander. Here he displayed the trademark intelligence that would become a defining characteristic during his rise in the church ranks. One fateful day, while the Bishop was discoursing over the scriptures concerning Christ, Arius openly disputed the divine nature of the risen Lord as asserted by the Bishop and the word of God. He argued that if Jesus Christ was born into this world in the flesh, he would have come into existence at the point of his birth. This means, if it is to be accepted as fact, that there was a time that he did not exist, like all other creatures.
He further asserted that the heavenly father was separate from Christ by time and substance as Christ was made of flesh and God is a divine spirit. Among his converted supporters were Eusebius of Nicomedia1, whom Constantine trusted as a friend and adviser, many Bishops in Asia and some of the clergy of Alexandria.
