Many children have IPhones, and enjoy these gadgets more than reading a storybook. States have banned these phones in the classroom, helping teachers to have no distractions in classroom. Growing up I was always went to the school library to borrow a book to read at home, as buying books was an expense for my parents. Books were loaned weekly, giving me enough time to read my book.
My parents expected me to finish my homework before I could read it, reading it to my sister. At school my friends would ask if I would recommend the book to them. We all had imagined that as adults, we could write our own story book based on our experiences.
I went to college to study English literature. This gave me the advantage to write short articles in newsletters for YWCA, RED CROSS, United Nations Women’s Guild (UNWG).
When my husband joined UN headquarters in New York, I was invited by Mary Rockefeller, chairperson of the World Issues Committee of the YWCA of USA, to serve on the WORLD ISSUES Committee, representing them at the UN General Assembly. YWCA is a category 1 NGO of the UN, so attending the annual session in September gave me another opportunity to write a report for YWCA’s newsletter.
From Delhi where I was born in a modest family, to UN in New York was “To Dream The Impossible Dream’.

Uma R. Banerjee, wife of former United Nations civil servant
Dr. Ajit Banerjee, has dedicated her life to her family, service to friends and neighbors, and sharing her stories about experiences living in several countries.
From Southeast Asia to Europe and the United States, she championed projects supporting women and children through organizations such as the YWCA, Red Cross, and the United Nations Women’s Guild.
A devoted mother and grandmother, she also instilled compassion in her family by rescuing animals from the SPCA as pets for her children.
Her beloved tales-like Furry the Chipmunk-is one that she shared with her children and grandchildren, who motivated her to write a story book that other young mothers’ could use as a bedtime storybook.
