He Will Restore

Becoming the Key Holder 2 Samuel 6 is a chapter brimming with emotion. It tells the story of King David bringing the Ark of the Covenant back to Jerusalem, and in doing so, brings the presence of God closer to the heart of His people. But it’s not a smooth, polished journey. It’s raw. Human. And deeply relative. I’m sure you’d agree that this chapter speaks to the tension many of us feel in our own journeys: when we’re trying to do the right thing, but life goes wrong. When our zeal runs ahead of our humility. David wanted to honor God, but he had to relearn how to do it in a way that respected God’s holiness. That moment of loss and devastation isn’t the end of his story — it’s the turning point. No two paths of loss are the same. What you’ve carried, survived, or quietly endured is significant and sacred. Your pain is no less than anyone else’s. Grief has many faces, and it meets each of us differently. While I don’t claim to be an expert, I will share parts of my personal journey, honestly and vulnerably alongside the unwavering truths of God’s Word as you begin to allow God to write yours. My hope and prayer for you is that you’ll recognize where you are in your story during this study, and when you do, you’ll feel seen. Strengthened. Empowered. Not to rush ahead, but to take the next faithful step toward restoration onward to the place where healing begins. Let’s begin with intention: What would you ask the Lord to restore for you? (Consider your circumstances, relationships, opportunities, or dreams.) What would you ask the Lord to restore in you? (Think about your heart, your joy, your faith, your peace, your identity. Take a moment to see the difference. They go hand in hand, but they are not the same. I’m sure David longed for his external situation to be restored. But we will learn throughout this journal how important his internal restoration was and how important ours is. External restoration is powerful. When relationships are mended, status is restored, or circumstances improve, these are visible signs of redemption. They become a testimony to God’s grace. But internal restoration—the quiet, soul-deep work of God, is truly transformative. It happens when the blinds to our spiritual windows are pulled back, unseen work is done deep within us and that becomes the tool we are able to use to testify. David’s experience shows us that while the outside world can change— circumstances may improve, relationships might heal but some losses, like the death of a loved one, are permanent. No matter what happens around us, we can’t undo that loss. This is why internal restoration—the healing of our hearts and minds is so important. It helps us carry on, find peace, and learn to live with absence while still honoring the love that remains. My hope and heart is that through understanding this, you will be encouraged if you have experienced this kind of loss. What part of 2 Samuel 6 spoke to you first? You get a brief highlighted reel of a process that took months behind the scenes. In just a short time, you see the before, the transformation, and the stunning reveal. That’s how it felt for me reading this story. God’s Word changes everything. It’s powerful because it’s Living. You can read the same verse in different stages of life, and each time, it can speak to a different part of your heart or situation. It brings both comfort and direction. Yet too often, we turn to it only when we’ve run out of options. Let’s change that together! Here’s what I’ve come to know for sure: you don’t have to walk through life alone. You hold the key—and God is gently asking you to let Him in. As home renovators, we often see properties that are for auction, some in rare form. No doubt they need us, but they come with lots of messes and warnings. Some we can work with, others we cannot. But one big deal breaker is when a home is being sold without access or a key. Being a key holder means recognizing that you have the power to open the door of your heart and this is a gift…even if your “house” is not presentable. God stands ready. Not to force His way in, but to be invited. To enter the pain, the questions, the silence, and the mess. Restoration doesn’t begin with striving; it begins with surrender.
