What might the Holy Spirit say to us? What does He want us to know? He might comfort us in trials; after all, Jesus called Him “another Comforter” (John 14:16-17, KJV), and He is our “6”. He might call us to service as He did in Acts 13:1-4, instructing the church at Antioch to set Barnabas and Saul apart for His special work, and then sent them out. He might admonish us and convict us of sin (Neh. 9:30-31; Micah 3:7-8). If the Holy Spirit can convict the world of sin (John 16:8-11), He can certainly convict believers. He might counsel us in the direction we should go (Acts 16:6-10). When Paul, Silas, and Timothy (on Paul’s second missionary journey), sought to “speak the word in Asia,” the Holy Spirit said “No.” So they turned and tried “to go into Bithynia, and the Spirit of Jesus did not permit them.” I’m guessing that at that time they were seriously questioning God’s direction on their lives. But I rather think that the Holy Spirit was negating their own wishes and desires, for He had greater work for them in Macedonia. In our times of doubt and uncertainty even about our faith, the Holy Spirit will convince us of God’s truth, for He is the “Spirit of truth” (John 14:17; 15:26; 16:13; I John 4:6). Jesus told us that, when we are brought before authorities because of our faith, it’s the Holy Spirit who will teach us at the right time “about how or what [we] are to speak in [our] defense” (Matt. 10:19-20; Luke 12:11-12). He might call us to use our spiritual gifts in the church, to prophesy or discern or teach, in order to edify, exhort, and console the whole body (I Cor. 12:8-11, 28-31a; 14:3, 13-16, 26-33). Is this the limit of His teaching? No! I have a strong tendency to believe that “all things” means all things!

About the Author
Born and raised in Pontiac, Michigan, David P. Brien attended Moody Bible Institute (Chicago, Illinois) and graduated from the Detroit Bible College (later William Tyndale College, now defunct) with a bachelor of religious education. He received his master of religious education degree from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (Louisville, Kentucky) and his doctor of ministry degree from Beeson Divinity School of Sanford University (Birmingham, Alabama). He has served in a variety of church staff positions in both Michigan and South Carolina, including music and youth director, minister of education, pastor, and interim pastor. He also served as the director of missions for the Screven Baptist Association in Summerville, South Carolina. He’s retired, and he and his wife, Claudia, are the proud parents of two sons, three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
