January 2026 hit me like a truck for some reason. There’s something about a fresh start and a new year's goal that the enemy loves to rip to shreds. This particular year, I faced a lot of spiritual warfare around the topic of marriage. I was turning 25, and for whatever reason, it felt like my life was over. I write and talk about singleness often, and I am expectant and hopeful that God will answer the ‘dear future husband’ prayer soon. But the waiting this year has been a little extra difficult. Most of my friends are married and starting to have kids, and the desire to be just like them is strong.
One night, Jesus and I were having one of our long discussions, and I asked him, “Why in the world do I want this so badly?” and in my head I heard “read Romans 8”. Tearfully, I pulled out my Bible and began to read.
The verses that I believe He wanted me to read were Romans 8:24-26.
“For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.”
These words absolutely changed my mindset, and I hope you find this encouraging. No matter what you are waiting for, there is a deeper spiritual reason and intercession that is taking place. Not only does the Holy Spirit pray for us when we have no words left or when the emotions are too strong, but in the example of marriage, the Holy Trinity is communicating something extraordinary. This deep, almost guttural, all-consuming, painful desire for marriage is the same desire God has to bring us to heaven. What the Lord revealed to me in this moment was the human desire for marriage, and the prayers we pray for our future spouse is a very similar process to how the Holy Spirit intercedes to God the Father on our behalf. The Son and Spirit are begging God to bring us into glory.
This world is not our home. We are meant to be with our heavenly Father. He desires his bride to be with him infinitely more than we desire to be married here on earth. As someone who prays for my future marriage daily, that is hard for me to comprehend. This Word from the Lord changed my perspective, and I pray it does for you, too. What an honor it is to get to suffer a fraction of what God is suffering. I know my God is merciful, and I know that the Holy Spirit is interceding on my behalf. I know and trust that he will not allow me to suffer this way longer than I can handle, but what a privilege it is to get to experience an emotion that God is experiencing.
Waiting is hard, and emotions are high, but may we take comfort in the knowledge that what we are experiencing right now is also being experienced in heaven. God will come through but treasure this moment where you are more like him than you realize.
