Webster’s dictionary provides several definitions for the term “time-out”. One of them describes a method of discipline for a child who is misbehaving. In this technique the unruly child is briefly sent to a quiet, isolated space to calm down before rejoining the play of others. This is exactly what was needed when I was 50 years old! Struggling through the effects of a mid-life crisis with two children still in college, a business that was in neutral and being over the hill, my life was in turmoil. I was irritable, grouchy, not very pleasant to be around, and in bad need of a “time-out.” So, I decided to charter a boat and sail for a while in order to regain my composure. I located a captain about my age who had a fifty-foot Beneteau sloop sailboat in the British Virgin Islands. To save money, I arranged a deal with him to allow my son (who was twenty years old at the time) and me to be the crew of the boat. Captain “Jerry”, my son and I sailed the eastern Caribbean for nine days without a phone or computer or television, and without noise or stress. This was a perfect isolated place where a person could reflect on their life and calm down before rejoining reality. I returned from that trip with three very important life-changing ideas…

About the Author
Perrin K. Parker is a retired business owner and outdoorsman who has served as an adult Sunday School teacher for churches in North and South Carolina. He earned a degree in psychology and sociology from Western Carolina University and completed post-graduate studies at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Perrin has two sons, a daughter and four grandchildren, he and his wife live on Lake Murray in Prosperity, South Carolina.
