Unbreakable

From the outside, our love story seems as magical as a fairy tale. People often remark on how strong we look, how seamlessly we move together through life. Brandon and I are the perfect couple to them, an example of unwavering support and harmony. But behind our closed doors, within the intimacy of our shared space, our love is far more complex. It is a tapestry of both beautiful and difficult moments, woven together by our shared commitment to each other and to our daughter, Ella.
We met online, a spark that somehow made it through the pixels. When we finally met in person, the spark held—and we started dating. Brandon was the one who made rooms soften—confident, warm, the kind of presence that saw people. I was the planner with timelines and color-coded dreams. Together we looked like a force.
But the truth is, those first years were both a wonder and work. We traveled and chased our goals, yes—and we stumbled, argued, apologized, tried again. We were still learning each other’s edges. When our daughter, Ella, developed complex medical needs at just seven months old, our lives changed dramatically. The carefree days of our early marriage were replaced with a new reality: hospital visits, therapy sessions, and a constant undercurrent of worry.
Ella's challenges demanded every ounce of our energy, often leaving us emotionally and physically exhausted. She was diagnosed with epilepsy, failure to thrive, developmental delay, ADHD and Autism, each condition bringing its own set of obstacles. We found ourselves navigating a labyrinth of medical appointments, medication trials, and therapy sessions. Every day was a delicate balancing act, each decision we made carrying weighty implications. Should we pursue a new treatment? How would we balance work and caregiving? Each choice tested the very foundation of our relationship.
Despite these challenges, we found strength in our love for Ella and our commitment to each other. We discovered that love is not just about the beautiful moments; it's about facing the ugly ones together. When Ella had her first seizure, I remember feeling a mix of terror and helplessness. Brandon held my hand, his grip a lifeline in the storm. We sat by her bedside for hours, our silent vigil a testament to our shared determination to face whatever came our way.
As Ella grew, her needs evolved, and so did our roles as her parents. We became her advocates, fighting for the best care and educational opportunities. Our days were filled with therapy sessions and medical appointments, each one a step toward helping Ella reach her full potential.
Our relationship was far from perfect, and we often felt weak and overwhelmed within the privacy of our home. There were nights when exhaustion led to arguments, when the pressure of our responsibilities seemed too much to bear. Yet, in those moments, we also found a deeper connection. Our vulnerability became a bridge, allowing us to see each other in new and enduring ways. Brandon's strength wasn't just in his ability to remain composed; it was also in his willingness to show his fears and doubts.
One of the most challenging periods in our marriage came when I fell into a deep depression. The weight of Ella's condition, combined with the isolation I felt, became too much to handle. Prayer and scripture became lifelines—not immediate solutions, but steady reminders that I was not alone and that there was a strength beyond my own to lean on. Instead of a single turning-point moment, my renewal of faith happened little by little. Each day, I found it easier to hand over my worries, trusting that He would guide our family through the storm. In surrendering my doubts to the Lord, I discovered an unshakable source of strength that carried me when I couldn’t stand on my own.
What I didn’t fully realize at first was that Ella herself was showing me the path to deeper faith. In her innocence, resilience, and unwavering will, she reflected a quiet trust that far surpassed my own. Through her small victories, her laughter in the midst of difficulty, and her simple acceptance of each day as it came, Ella became my greatest teacher. She reminded me that even when circumstances appear grim, God’s presence and grace can be found in each moment. Her life taught me more about leaning on the Lord’s strength than any sermon ever could, and for that, I am eternally grateful.
