About the Book

This is the true story of New Direction Farm: a Christian therapeutic boarding school for teenagers on top of a high mountain in middle-of-nowhere Madison County, North Carolina. Here, you will meet many people, but the main players are a stockbroker, a therapist, a marine, a hermit, and a prodigal son. Leaving their careers and starting from scratch, Bridget and David Walls followed the call of the Lord to “go and find a place set apart for the healing of youth and their families.” Rather than moving a mountain, God called them to a mountain. With the help of many hands and pockets of followers of Jesus Christ, New Direction Farm became a thriving community. According to the couple, “God was calling us to do life with the teenagers—to put aside all the diagnoses and simply teach them how to engage as contributing members of community. The values of respect and responsibility were the plumb lines from which each would operate.” Since opening its doors, over three hundred teenagers have lived on New Direction Farm over a seventeen-year period. Through faith—and God’s mercy and love— the Walls have been able to remain committed, through thick and thin. Now, meet them and all the other amazing people New Direction Farm has helped.
