Can Quantum Mechanics Better Explain the Operation of the Triune God?

2. Development of the Early Christian Faith
For centuries, people have been intrigued by the person called Jesus of Nazareth. What is it that intrigues not only those who believe in Jesus as Lord and Savior, but also those who reject his claim as Lord and Messiah? Why would countless people over two thousand years since the life and death of one man be so dedicated to a person who only lived thirty-three years, was a carpenter, had no formal education, was poor by the standards of most societies, and who ultimately was executed as a criminal under Roman authority? The oral traditions, beliefs, creeds, and developments by these followers, who were (initially) mostly Jewish converts, transformed a religious belief system that changed and revolutionized the world. They are called Christians, disciples, and followers of Jesus Christ. “The knowledge of Christ … is not the apprehension of what he is, simply by the intellect, but also a due apprehension of his glory as a divine person arrayed in our nature, and involves not as it consequence merely, but as one of its elements, the corresponding feeling of adoration, delight, desire, and complacency.” When one endeavors to study the Triune God and related matters of the Incarnation, rules of construction and analysis must be adhered to in order to combat the adoption of a heretical theology. The rules of construction that we will utilize in this research are multidimensional applications of exegesis, hermeneutics, and adherence to a Renewal theology. We will further rely on the early church fathers’ creeds, statements of faith, and early writings, as well as the application of quantum theory.
Even though there are many things that are highly confusing about Quantum mechanics, the nice thing is that it’s relatively easy to apply Quantum mechanics to a physical system to figure out how it behaves. There is fortunately no need to understand all of the subtleties about Quantum mechanics in order to use it. Of course, in most cases this isn’t the best strategy to take; it’s usually not a good idea to blindly forge ahead with something if you don’t understand what you’re actually working with. But this lack of understanding can be forgiven in the case of quantum mechanics, because no one really understands it. (Well, maybe a couple people do, but they’re few and far between.) If the world waited to use quantum mechanics until it understood it, then we’d be stuck back in the 1920’s. The bottom line is that Quantum mechanics can be used to make predictions that are consistent with experiment. It hasn’t failed us yet. So we would be foolish not to use it.

Starting with some of the earliest writings and creeds, we will use them for rules of construction and limitation, with the ultimate arbiter being scripture. The creeds we will most utilize and reference are the Nicene Creed of AD 325, the Nicene-Constantinople Creed of AD 381, and the Chalcedonian Creed of AD 451, for this complex study of the Triune God and its operations. We will also utilize sapiential thought in conjunction with other theological tools to be able to unmask one of the most elusive concepts, the Trinity, and its operations. The questions we will ask are, How does the Trinity operate—that being God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit—and how can we better understand and explain this most mysterious of concepts?
Gedankenexperiment, German for “thought experiment,” was Albert Einstein’s famous name for the imaginings that led to his greatest breakthroughs in physics. He traced his realization of light’s finite speed—the core idea of special relativity—to his teenage daydreams about riding beams of light. General relativity, his monumental theory of gravitation, has its origins in his musings about riding up and down in his elevator. In both cases, Einstein crafted new theories about the natural world by using his mind’s eye to push beyond the limitations of laboratory measurements. Einstein was neither the first nor the last theorist to do this, but his remarkable achievements were pivotal in establishing the gedankenexperiment as a cornerstone of modern theoretical physics. Today physicists regularly use thought experiments to formulate new theories and to seek out inconsistencies or novel effects within existing ones. But the modern embrace of thought experiments raises some uncomfortable questions. In the search for a grand unified theory that would wed the small-scale world of Quantum mechanics with Einstein’s relativistic description of the universe at large, the most popular current ideas are bereft of observational support from actual experiments. Can thought alone sustain them? How far can we trust logical deduction? Where is the line between scientific intuition and fantasy? Einstein’s legacy offers no certain answers.

The earliest statements of faith capture perfectly the orthodox faith of early Christians. These creeds were birthed against a cauldron of unbelief and pagan thought. What these early Christian writers attempted to establish was a collective statement of faith for the Christian churches worldwide and to protect the faith and its tenets from heresy and misapplication of scripture. No era of time was more fertile for heretical teaching and improper belief than the time of the early Christian church. The mysteries that surround the Triune God: the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, the God personified in three persons, and the mystery of the Incarnation still to this day confuse and astound. For that reason, we will limit our topic to a better understanding of the operation of the Triune God and the implication of the Word as to the second person of the Trinity.
A significant difference in early Christian thought as compared to culture and society of today is, “[e]arly Christian thinking … was as much an attempt to penetrate more deeply into the mystery of Christ, to know and understand what was believed and handed on in the churches.” The Renewal theologian must once again raise and address these mysteries.
We will discuss the significance of that early thought and just how God came to us in Jesus Christ through the Incarnation. The overriding objective of the early church was to more clearly understand the person and work of Jesus Christ, and to better understand the operation of the Triune God and why Jesus Christ is so venerated by people of different cultures, societies, and times.
