This book began with a simple thought: What if David, shepherd, warrior, poet, king, spoke to us today? Not in ancient Hebrew or poetic formality, but in plain, everyday language. Honest. Direct. From the heart.
The Psalms have always been powerful, raw cries for help, songs of joy, whispers of trust in dark places. But sometimes, the old words feel far away, wrapped in language that’s hard to hold onto in our modern world. So, I started to imagine what David might sound like now. What would his voice be like if he were writing from a coffee shop, a hospital bed, or a back porch under the stars?
In David’s Voice is a collection of popular Psalms, beloved Bible verses, and timeless prayers rewritten in clear, conversational language. Not to replace Scripture, but to walk beside it. These versions are meant to make the heart of the message accessible, especially for those who are seeking, struggling, or simply wanting to connect in a more personal way.
I call it In David’s Voice because that’s how it felt while writing. Like David was still speaking, just using the words we use now.
May these pages bring you comfort, clarity, and connection. And may you hear God’s voice as clearly as David once did, in your own language and in your own life.
How to Use This Book
When I first started writing these prayers and paraphrases, I wasn’t aiming to write a book. I was simply trying to find language for my own faith. I needed a way to talk to God that felt real and reachable.
That’s what this book is about, bringing scripture into everyday language so it can meet you right where you are.
Here’s how you can make the most of it:
Read one entry at a time. Each section, whether a Psalm, a beloved verse, or a prayer, is designed to stand on its own. Take your time. Some people read one a day, others once a week. Find your own rhythm.
Pray the words like they’re yours. These paraphrased scriptures are meant to guide your heart into your own conversation with God.
Reflect and respond. After each entry, you’ll find a devotional thought, study notes, reflection questions, a summary, and space for journaling.
Use it with a group. This book isn’t just for quiet mornings with coffee (though that’s a great place to start). It’s also for small groups, Bible studies, prayer circles, and ministry gatherings.
Pair it with Scripture. These paraphrases are companions, not replacements. Read them alongside the original verses.
Wherever you are, strong or struggling, full of faith or full of questions, this book is for you. Open your heart. Be honest. And listen. He’s still speaking.
Excerpt from Psalm 23: The Shepherd’s Prayer
I remember the hills of Bethlehem,
when I was just a boy with a sling and a staff.
The sheep trusted me, and I watched the skies,
but more than anything, I watched for Him.
God was always like a shepherd to me.
Long before I was king, I was just one of His sheep.
He gave me everything I needed, fresh grass to lie in,
clean water to drink, and rest when I was tired.
Every time I felt worn out, He helped me feel whole again.
Even when I lost my way, He gently brought me back,
guiding me toward what was right, just because of who He is.
I’ve been through dark and dangerous places, facing enemies,
running for my life, even betrayed by people I loved.
But I didn’t fall apart.
Why? Because He stayed with me.
He corrected me when I needed it
and protected me when I couldn’t protect myself.
I was never really alone.
Even when I was surrounded by people who wanted to hurt me,
He showed me kindness.
He gave me peace right in front of them.
He poured oil on my head like a king,
but more than that, it was His way of saying,
“I choose you.”
And my cup? It’s been overflowing ever since.
Now that I look back, I see it so clearly,
God’s goodness and love were with me all along,
even when I was running from them.
And when this life ends,
and I finally get to rest for good,
I know where I’m going.
I’ll be at home with Him,
not just for a little while,
but forever.
