Chapter 1: Early Years and Spiritual Awakening I have been walking with Lord Yeshua for forty-six years now. I’ve refrained from using the word serve because, in those years, I have at times gone far afield of anywhere He would have had me go. In this walk, He has never left me, nor has He let me down, though there were certainly times when I wouldn’t have agreed with that assessment at that moment. I wish to write to somehow give you, my children, a better understanding of who I have become in this walk and what the Lord has taught me. I have difficulty in verbalizing these things and hope to do better with ink and paper. I discovered and now believe that it isn’t as much about how we get it right or the things we do wrong, but who we are now and who we are becoming. What we become is centered on our relationship with the Messiah. There are things in this world that we will struggle with our whole life, but the wonderful experience of life is about our journey with Messiah — coming to know the One we have called Jesus and to take on His nature as we walk through this experience. For you younger three, I have been very encouraged to see you walk in the Lord Yeshua, watching you grow and teaching your mom and me also as you grow. You, our children, have taught us so much, and in teaching you, we have again found more than we could ever have imagined. But the man I am at this moment is a far different man than the one who began this journey so many years ago. As a child, I was an avid reader. I love history to this day. I read a lot of biographies, about the lives of both my spiritual and national heroes, more of the latter than the former. I could find more national heroes than spiritual heroes to read about due to the availability of those books. I remember thinking that the best death a man could endure was as a martyr in Christianity, and the second-best death would be to die for one’s country. Why would I think this? Because a lot of heroes die in their own stories, I suppose. I was not dark in any way and really enjoyed life as a child, but that is where I was in my thinking.

I’m just a man who once stood in awe of God as a boy—and who’s spent a lifetime trying to walk with Him, fall at His feet, and get back up again. If you had told me as a kid that my life would one day, be a testimony, I’m not sure I’d have believed you. But I’ve seen too much to doubt, “I’ve wandered, I’ve wrestled, I’ve questioned everything I was taught. And through all of it I’ve found that the Lord Yeshua, our Messiah, is faithful.
This book is for my children, those by blood and those by Spirit. It is for anyone who has ever wondered whether God still speaks and wonders what to do when He does. It’s for anyone who has been shattered by loss, worn out by religion, or brought to their knees by grace. My story is not perfect. It’s not always pretty. But it is real. And most of all, it’s about Him.
To the God who never left me—to Yeshua, who has always walked beside me—I offer this testimony.
