About the Book
A River, a Radio, and a Rocking Chair is more than a book — it’s a journey through memory, legacy, and the quiet but powerful voice of faith. Drawing on the rediscovered writings of Jean Miller and the reflections of her son, Jay S. Miller, this work weaves together three simple images: a river, a radio, and a rocking chair, into timeless lessons about listening to God, cherishing family, and embracing the seasons of life. Jean’s original words, written decades ago and tucked away, are now brought to life alongside Jay’s modern-day perspective. Together, they tell a story of faith and of everyday moments that carry eternal meaning. Each chapter feels both intimate and universal, reminding readers that God often speaks in the ordinary, and that life’s greatest treasures are found in relationships, resilience, and remembering. Readers will come away encouraged, inspired, and grounded in a faith that is both practical and profound. Whether you are searching for hope, navigating seasons of loss, or simply longing for a fresh word of encouragement, this book invites you to sit, listen closely, and discover the river of God’s faithfulness flowing through your own story.

Miller (July 10, 1939–January 4, 2012) was never just a pastor’s wife; she was a pillar of strength, the quiet architect behind the vision, and the soul of our family’s heartbeat. While her name may not have always been in the spotlight, her influence was woven into the very fabric of everything we built. For fifty-two unwavering years, she stood beside her husband, Pastor Sterling Miller—in comfort and in battle. Through storms and victories, through tears and triumphs, Jean remained steadfast, unmovable, and unshaken. Her love for people knew no bounds. She had a God-given grace to see beyond appearances and into hearts. Whether you were broken, wandering, or just needed someone to care, Jean made you feel seen, heard, and deeply valued. She didn’t just host a women’s Bible study—she led a movement. Thousands of women were drawn to her table of truth, captivated by her wisdom, her fierce love for the Word, and her unwavering devotion to the kingdom of God. Jean didn’t just preach with a microphone. She preached with her life. Every act of kindness, every prayer whispered in the dark, and every ounce of faith she carried—it was all part of her gospel. Her life was a living sermon, a beacon that pointed to Jesus. And even when her official time at The Family Church drew to a close, Jean’s calling burned brighter still. She wasn’t finished. She went on to help raise up three more churches, pouring her heart into each one until her final breath on January 4, 2012. But make no mistake—her story did not end there. Jean Miller may have stepped into eternity, but the legacy she left behind continues to speak. The seeds she sowed in silence are still blooming in lives all across this city and beyond. She didn’t just build churches. She built people. She built faith. She built a legacy. And we are still walking in the harvest of her obedience.
