Day One Legacy I toured my alma-mater with my two oldest grandchildren in the summer of 2024. I resisted the impulse to steal the spotlight from our charming Malone University Admissions Counselor with all of my cute stories and “relevant” commentary and memories. I determined to suppress my extroverted tendencies so as not to embarrass my family. A deep sense of nostalgia captured me as we progressed with our tour. The buildings were emblazoned with the names of faithful pilgrims who had a passion for influencing their generation with the goal of putting “Christ’s Kingdom first.” The resulting impact was that the next generation and their future would be transformed by the Good News of Jesus. Some were people whose faith was chronicled in Christian history hundreds of years ago. Others were the parents and grandparents of people with whom I am acquainted. All were remembered because of their unselfish calling to lovingly use their resources to glorify the Lord. Consequently, they left a legacy. Peter highlights that very priority in his first letter. Sensing the pressures of his culture’s deterioration under the heartless and godless rule of Rome, he senses the end of the world is near. As probably a sixty-plus year old, imprisoned for his faith, he prescribes a prayerful love for one another that joyfully serves with God-given gifts. 7 The end of all things is near. Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray. 8 Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. 9 Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. 10 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. 11 If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen (1 Peter 4:7-11, NIV). The big idea here is that all Christ followers have been graced with spiritual gifts to build up and encourage fellow believers and reach their world with the Gospel. When we use our supernatural gifts, God gets the glory, the Church is fruitful and we are blessed to be involved in the process. So, here is a question to consider today. How do you wish to be remembered? It is not premature or even narcissistic to think about what you would like for people to say about you at your funeral. Further, you do not need to have your name emblazoned on a building or be a super saint to make an impact on people in your world. Just be faithful with what God has given to you. It is what matters most. Prayer Eternal God, you are in control of all tomorrows for me. I desire to please you by stewarding the resources that I have been graced with, that your name might be glorified forever and ever. Amen. Reflection Questions 1. How do you wish to be remembered? 2.
