A Walk in the Garden

Survey Your Garden Scripture: John 10:10 "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." It is hard not to admire something beautiful. Just like a flower, it does not have to beg for attention. Yet sometimes poison can be growing beneath what appears lovely on the surface. One spring, my yard was filled with beautiful yellow wildflowers. Out of all the homes on my street, my yard seemed to bloom the brightest. I remember a neighbor saying, “Jay, you have more flowers than anyone else on this street.” The flowers were so beautiful that I did not want the grass cut. Eventually, the time came when I could not wait any longer. The yard needed attention, and I certainly did not want a citation from the Homeowners Association. When the grass was finally cut, I discovered something I had not seen before. Beneath the wildflowers, weeds had been growing unnoticed. Even worse, my lawn had developed a fungus that had spread throughout the yard. I could not understand what had happened. I had become so focused on the beauty of the flowers that I failed to notice what was growing underneath. While admiring the blooms, weeds and disease were quietly destroying the health of the grass. I eventually had to call a specialist to treat the fungus. The process was not instant. It required intentional care, treatment, maintenance, and patience. The diseased areas had to be addressed, and the remaining roots had to be strengthened so the grass could be restored. As I reflected on the condition of my yard, the Lord began speaking to me about the condition of our hearts. Many of us admire what looks beautiful on the surface while ignoring what is happening beneath. We celebrate growth, blessings, success, ministry, relationships, and opportunities, but fail to examine the hidden weeds growing within us. Bitterness. Pride. Unforgiveness. Jealousy. Compromise. Fear. These things often begin small, but if left unattended they can spread through every area of our lives. The enemy is strategic. He does not always announce his presence. According to John 10:10, his desire is to steal, kill, and destroy. This is why we must remain watchful, prayerful, and rooted in God's Word. The Holy Spirit is the Master Gardener. He reveals what needs attention, removes what is unhealthy, and nurtures what produces fruit. But we must be willing to allow Him access to every part of the garden. Life Application Take time to survey your garden. Ask God to reveal anything growing beneath the surface that should not be there. Invite Him to examine your heart and expose anything that hinders your relationship with Him. Healthy gardens require intentional care. Healthy spiritual lives do as well. Spend time in prayer. Spend time in Scripture. Spend time in God's presence. The Lord desires not only beautiful flowers, but healthy roots. Reflection Questions • What weeds may be growing beneath the surface of my life? • Have I become distracted by outward appearances while neglecting my heart? • What areas of my life need God's healing and restoration? • How can I become more intentional in cultivating my relationship with God? Prayer Heavenly Father, thank You for being the Master Gardener of my life. Search my heart and reveal anything that is not pleasing to You. Remove every weed, every unhealthy root, and every hidden thing that hinders my growth. Help me cultivate a life that is fruitful, healthy, and pleasing in Your sight. Strengthen my roots in Your Word and teach me to remain watchful and dependent upon You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
