The foundational concepts of authority will be defined in this spiritual context highlighting God as the supreme foundation of authority. Lastly, it will drive us toward a deeper comprehension of how this authority is manifested and cultivated in our lives, offering a solid framework on the journey toward a deeper spiritual connection. I. SPIRITUAL AUTHORITY: A PANORAMIC VIEW As we previously mentioned, in this writing we shall embark upon a journey of discovery that explores the concept of spiritual authority from a biblical and theological perspective. Our objective is to provide an integral and balanced vision addressing its foundations, implications and practical applications in the context of the Christian life. At the same time, it aims to establish a solid foundation in the Word of God in order to comprehend the true significance and purpose and to be able to exercise it in accordance with the biblical principles. CONCEPTS OF SPIRITUAL AUTHORITY The influence of spiritual authority transcends beyond well-known religious leaders; it also encompasses the transforming power of the sacred scriptures. A. Definitions of authority Dr. Chandrakumar Manickam, in his investigation on the word “authority,” found the following: “The dictionary defines the word authority as “the power or right to control, judge or prohibit the actions of others.” The Greek translation of “authority” is “exousia” which means “privilege, force, capacity, competence, delegated influence, seniority, power”. Dr. Manickam’s contribution on authority, based on the dictionary definition and the Greek word "exousia," offers a profound perspective on the role of spiritual leaders currently. The inclusions of meanings such as privilege, competence and dignity underline the responsibility that this position entails. In addition, it urges leaders to act as spiritual catalysts and avoid any form of abuse of power. According to Steve W. Lemke, The Greek word for authority is exousia in both the NT and the Septuagint. Although it is sometimes translated as “power,” exousia does not originally refer to a strength or physical might (such as dunamis) but the rightful and legitimate exercise of power. A person has authority primarily by virtue of the position he occupies and not by physical force or coercion. Currently, the concept of spiritual authority, as described by Lemke, still remains relevant, since it does not derive only from the position of leadership but from integrity and the capacity to guide and serve with justice and love.
