Skyway Miracle
We attended the Friday night meetings faithfully after that, and through many prayers of the group, God did another one of His miracles. As Nancy was preparing to close her office for the day on March 10, 1975, she had some time before catching her bus so she returned to the book. She was at a page with a prayer to repent of all known sins, to surrender your life to God, and to receive Jesus as Lord and Savior of your life. From the bottom of her heart, she did just that. She immediately felt the lifting of a huge burden, and a warmth that began in her midsection soon enveloped her and gave her a peace she had never known. All fear of death lifted from her. She was assured of her salvation and was full of joy, eager to leave the office to tell me of her experience. But God wasn’t done with her quite yet. In a few minutes, He would show Himself to her in an amazing way. She locked up and used the Skyway system as always to get to her bus stop. It was normally a long and painful walk for her. It was about five forty-five in the evening, and the sky was dark and overcast, threatening rain or snow. When she was midway across the Skyway over Minnesota Street, it was suddenly as though a part of the cloud bank opened, and a single beam of sunshine found her and touched the top of her head. Its warmth moved down her spine to the end of her tailbone. At that moment, all her back pain disappeared. She did not know what had just happened, but she knew she really wanted to fall to her knees and praise and thank God for what she had just experienced. But she was afraid that someone would call the men in white coats to take her away, so she refrained.
Now able to move free of pain, she hurried to the bus stop, got on, and headed to the restaurant to meet me. We were running a restaurant part-time in a bar, with the help of Nancy’s sister Betty. Nancy would usually meet me there, and we’d take care of business and then head home together.
When she arrived, she rushed to me, half laughing, half crying. I held her close, and then we sat down. I asked her to tell me all about it. Here was a woman who often had to crawl on all fours to do certain chores or projects, but now she was moving well and free of pain. She was so excited and happy that I couldn’t help but get excited and happy as well.
Over the next few months—before the office closed and moved to Florida—Nancy continued working in her position as a paralegal in the law office and as a reviewer of grant requests for the foundation that shared the office space. She was in charge of closing the office at this location and getting it moved to Florida, which changed the direction of our lives.
Hospital Miracle
I could tell that working two jobs, with days at 3M and every night in the bar and restaurant, was taking a toll on my health. A day or two after Nancy’s amazing and miraculous healing, I was not feeling well at all. I decided to see my doctor. In his office, we discovered I had very high blood pressure. He checked my reflexes and said I didn’t have any. My heart rate was also very fast, so he sent me to the hospital directly from his office.
Later, as I was lying in my bed at the hospital, I got to thinking about the Christ-centered meetings, the joy I was feeling about Nancy’s healing, and the condition of my own health. I decided it was time to surrender my life to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. To this day I can still remember the simple prayer I said: “Lord Jesus, forgive me for my sins. I surrender my will and my life to you. Take me; do whatever you want with me. I am yours from this day forward. Amen.”
I got up from my bed and went into the shower. While there, it felt like a very heavy weight lifted off my shoulders, and I broke out in song with tears of joy.
Early the next morning, around six o’clock, the nurse came and woke me up. She immediately took my blood pressure. In fact, she took it several times. She looked at me and told me she was going to get a different cuff. She then took it again and looked at me strangely. By this point, I was getting a bit concerned and asked her what was going on. She said, “I don’t get it. You have the blood pressure of a newborn baby.” I said, “I guess it’s because I was born again last night.” She just smiled.
Glory to God! That was definitely a miracle—the kind that only the Holy Spirit of God can complete so gracefully.
