History of Receive God’s Mercy The book 'Receive God’s Mercy' recounts Don’s journey into a ministry of praise and blessing, focused on serving the homeless, poor, workers and tourists, in downtown Nashville and its surrounding neighborhoods. While working at a parking lot called “Ragland,” where his job involved picking up trash, Don became acutely aware of an eerie silence in the downtown streets. This was despite the ever-present noise of construction, traffic, police sirens, and the bustle of people heading to their jobs, hotels, or restaurants. The silence was not literal but a hollow absence—what Don came to recognize as a spirit of oppression, a suppression of the knowledge of God and His truth. Moved by this realization, Don began carrying a boom box over his shoulder while he worked, playing praise and worship music loudly for all to hear. The music caught the attention of homeless individuals camped on the sidewalks nearby, who were uplifted by songs like “Every Praise” by Hezekiah Walker. These interactions sparked connections and friendships, marking the beginning of Don’s ministry to the homeless community. His work became a mission to share God’s mercy through music, kindness, and service. A friend from church, who was connected to a non-profit, began supporting the ministry by providing Don with non-perishable food items and clothing each Sunday. These supplies were enough to serve between 25 and 40 people weekly. Don would pack the items into individual plastic grocery bags, stack them in the back seat of his car, and distribute them after he completed his work at Ragland. Over time, donations of clothing from neighbors and other church members began pouring in, further bolstering the ministry. Even when supplies ran out, Don remained committed, continuing to drive around downtown Nashville each day, playing praise and worship music and greeting workers and the homeless with kindness and encouragement. However, the supplies from the non-profit have now been depleted, and the ministry is actively seeking new ways to obtain or purchase non-perishable food items and clothing. Despite this challenge, Don and his team remain steadfast in their mission. From May 2024 to the present, the ministry has cultivated deep and meaningful connections, and the opportunities to expand and strengthen its impact continue to grow. Through the power of praise and worship music, acts of kindness, prayer and faithful service, Don’s God-given ministry brings hope and the message of God’s mercy to everyone in downtown Nashville and beyond.
