Matthew Chapter Twenty-Two
Key Scripture: “And Jesus replied to him, “You shall love the LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND,” (Matthew 22:37).
In this passage of scripture, Jesus lets us know our most important purpose here on earth and that is to love the Lord our God with everything within us: “all our heart, all our soul, and all our mind.” “This is the first and greatest commandment,” (Matthew 22:38). You may ask how we show the Lord, we love him. We should show the Lord, we love him, by obeying his commandments and showing respect unto him as the most Supreme Spirit being. Jesus says, “If you [really] love me, you will keep and obey my commandments,” (John 14:15). We show God, we love him by believing and trusting in him, as the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. “The person who has my commandments and keeps them is the one who [really] loves me; and whoever [really] loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal myself to him [I will make myself real to him],” (John 14:21).
Jesus is God manifest in the flesh. If we love God, we must love Jesus Christ also. “And great, we confess, is the mystery [the hidden truth] of godliness: He (Jesus Christ) who was revealed in human flesh, was justified and vindicated in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory,” (I Timothy 3:16). Love is our major work in life, which we must demonstrate through faith. For the Bible tells us: “The one who does not love has not become acquainted with God [does not and never did know him], for God is love. [He is the originator of love, and it is an enduring attribute of his nature],” (I John 4:8).
Prayer
Father God, I love you and by faith in Christ I will sincerely do my best to keep and obey your commandments. You are a God of love and mercy. I will forever love you and your darling Son, Jesus Christ, with all my heart, soul, and mind.
Luke Chapter Five
Key Scripture: “But when they did not find any way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down through the tiles with his stretcher, into the middle of the crowd, in front of Jesus,” (Luke 5:19).
In this passage of scripture, in Luke chapter five, beginning in verse eighteen, we see “some men” carrying another man “who was paralyzed on a stretcher,” to Jesus for healing. The men couldn’t get their friend to Jesus by pressing through the crowd, so they went upon the roof top and lowered him down through the roof and placed him in front of Jesus. When Jesus saw their great faith; he forgave the paralyzed man of his sins and healed him so that he could walk.
How many of us would go through great lengths to bring our friends, family members, or even strangers to Christ? For we should: “Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ,” (Galatians 6:2). These men were exercising their faith with works by bringing the man, who was destitute or in need of a blessing, to Jesus. For the Bible says: “What use is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone says he has faith, but he has no works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and be filled,” Yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that?” (James 2:14-16). These men were friends to the paralyzed man. They loved him so much that they just didn’t wish for him to be healed. They worked and brought him to Jesus to be healed. The paralyzed man was destitute and in need of healing and these men met his needs. We are called to love one another and to care for the needs of one another. “A friend loves at all times,” (Proverbs 17:17).
Prayer
Father God, I pray, “Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins. Be hospitable to one another without complaint. As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the multifaceted grace of God,” (I Peter 4:8-10).
