Preface To my knowledge, no other book has aligned scientifically derived evidence with the textual clues found in Genesis 1–11. Reflections on Genesis has attempted to do just that. In writing Reflections on Genesis, every effort was made to remain faithful both to Scripture and to scientific evidence—evidence unavailable to the original writers of Genesis and to later interpreters of the text—as it relates to the events described in Genesis 1–11. This work was undertaken prayerfully, and I believe that, under God’s guidance, a genuine harmony between Scripture and evidence has been achieved. Evidence cannot be ignored. Throughout this work, great care was taken not to force scientific or historical evidence onto Scripture to reinterpret the Bible. Instead, reason was allowed to guide the discussion as evidence and Scripture were weighed together. Every effort was made to maintain the sovereignty of God, respect the authority of scriptures and respect the findings of science as they pertain to the events described in Genesis 1–11. This book was prayed over as it was written, and I believe a genuine harmony between evidence and Scripture has been achieved. This book explores the key events of Genesis—creation, the origin of humanity, the image of God, patriarchal lifespans, the Flood, and the Tower of Babel—and examines how the alignment of evidence and Scripture influences traditional interpretations of these foundational accounts. Genesis 1–11 is the focus because these chapters are frequently questioned, challenged, or dismissed as myth. When evidence is ignored or separated from Scripture, doubt often fills the void. For believers, the alignment of Scripture with evidence strengthens confidence in the faith and enhances the ability to share it meaningfully. For skeptics or seekers, it offers a reasoned framework for considering the truth of Scripture—one supported by evidence and capable of dispelling the “myth” label so often attached to Genesis. Genesis 1–11 also marks a profound transition in redemptive history. It reflects God’s pre-creation covenant to bring humanity to be holy and blameless in His sight through Jesus Christ, while establishing the divine and authoritative foundation upon which the remainder of Scripture rests. Evidence does nothing to change that. To give credit where credit is due, my interest in the relationship between evidence and Scripture was founded in the fact that my degrees were in science and that I was a Christion. It was later kindled by the work of scholars far more learned and eloquent than I—particularly Hugh Ross,1 Gerald Schroeder,2 and Jeffrey Sauer3. Their work opened my mind to the intersection of science and Scripture and helped clarify and confirm thoughts I had long held. Their contributions are essential for anyone seriously exploring the relationship between faith and science. I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the encouragement and challenge provided by my colleagues in a Wednesday study group known as the Discovery Group. Any topic is welcome, but the focus remains on the Bible, the Christian faith, and competing worldviews. It is a setting where respectful debate is the norm and where “iron sharpens iron.” Several topics addressed in this book were sharpened through those discussions, resulting in greater clarity and focus. For me, Reflections on Genesis has been a journey of discovery—one that has revealed new insights into God’s handiwork and stirred a deeper sense of awe and worship. Engaging with the evidence has expanded my understanding of Scripture and deepened my reverence for the omniscience, omnipotence, and omnibenevolence of God. I have come to appreciate more fully that the Bible tells us what God did, while science can help us understand how He did it. God is the originator and author of both. Without apology to those who perceive that the evidence presented in this book somehow threatens the Gospel, I affirm unequivocally that it does not. My belief in the Bible as God’s Word and in Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior is unwavering. As the one who conducted the research and interpreted the evidence as it relates to Scripture, I can say with confidence that my already strong faith became stronger. When aligned with Scripture, the evidence has only deepened my appreciation for our all-powerful, all-knowing, and all-benevolent Creator and Savior. Nothing presented in Reflections on Genesis conflicts in any way with Christian theology as articulated in the Apostles’ Creed or the Nicene Creed. I will stand firmly on the premise that evidence—whether it supports conventional interpretations or challenges them—can illuminate Genesis 1–11 in new ways without compromising core Christian doctrine. For me this journey is not over because new evidence will continue to be discovered further testifying to the power and wonderment of our creator. I invite you to join me and hope that the alignment of scripture and evidence will strengthen your faith as it has mine. Readers, please accept this prayer of the Apostle Paul in Ephesians, that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord's holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Ephesians 3: 16-19. For non-believers or those wrestling with doubt, hear this plainly: you will never receive a better offer in this life than what God has extended to you through His plan of salvation. There is life beyond this one—eternal life—if, in this life, you believe in Jesus Christ and the good news He proclaimed.

There has never been a book like Reflections on Genesis. It confronts the gap between scientific evidence and traditional interpretations of Genesis 1–11. A new perspective is offered that aligns biblical events with discoveries from physics, mathematics, history, and the applied sciences—including anthropology, archaeology, geology, and paleontology. The result is a deeper and more accurate understanding of these foundational chapters of Scripture. Genesis 1 describes creation, and when examined alongside available evidence, a more precise and compelling interpretation of the origins of the universe and humanity emerges. Genesis 2–11 is firmly set in Mesopotamia, chronicling the era from Adam to Abraham. By integrating the vast body of scientific and historical evidence, a new light is shed on Adam’s life and purpose, the Flood, and the Tower of Babel, offering a more coherent and historically grounded interpretation than the traditional view. Some readers may wonder whether the book’s findings challenge the authorship or inerrancy of Genesis. The answer is no. The evidence presented upholds traditional beliefs in both. Importantly, these insights resulting from the alignment of evidence with scripture do not alter the core Christian doctrine that Adam introduced sin into the world and that Jesus Christ, through His death and resurrection, fulfilled God’s plan of salvation conceived before creation.
About the Author
Dr. Southard iis a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute, holding a Master of Science from George Washington University and a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His career spans 40 years in pharmaceutical and biotechnology research and development, where he served as Board Chairman, CEO, and Chief Science Officer. In parallel, Dr. Southard dedicated 26 years to military service as an artillery, chemical, and military intelligence officer in both active duty and the reserves. He commanded two units and retired as a Colonel in the U.S. Army. For over 30 years, he has been active in youth ministry, committed to equipping young people and adults to become disciples of Christ—able to confidently defend their faith in any setting. He believes that a strong faith, coupled with intellectual understanding, is key to sustaining belief. This conviction led him to write To Know with Certainty, addressing doubts that often cause young Christians to leave their faith. During this journey, he uncovered a crisis: the rapid decline of Christianity in America, primarily due to young people losing belief. If this trend continues, Christianity will become a minority religion in the U.S. by 2039, with profound consequences for the nation. In response, he wrote The Battle We Must Not Lose, calling parents, churches, and the nation to reprioritize the spiritual development of youth. His latest work, Reflections on Genesis, explores Genesis 1–11 through the lens of modern science. Aligning biblical accounts with evidence from physics, mathematics, archaeology, geology, and paleontology, the book provides new insights unavailable to the original writers, offering a fresh understanding of these foundational scriptures.
