The next morning she was still mad. Her body was twitching mad. She could barely eat. Then there was a knock on the door. She walked to the door and knocked and it opened. She walked out and stalked past him and kept walking. Mace caught up to her and kept walking too. He didn’t talk. Jordan wanted to confront him, but she was never the type of person to get into arguments. She started to lift weights and was pushing harder than usual. Mace didn’t have to give her instructions, she knew what to do and she started while Mace walked a bit aways and leaned against the wall. Mace walked over to her after a while and said “Slow down, this isn’t a race.”
“Why not? I better get as good as I can be. Nobody is going to save me. You are supposed to train me, but in reality you don’t care.” Jordan spat back at him while doing bicep curls.
“What are you talking about?” Mace said with clear confusion.
“I’m just saying that I am the only one who is going to be able to help myself from not getting…” She stopped and turned to look at him. “You could stop this if you wanted to, but you don’t. You just sit there and do what you are told. You don’t care about me.” At this point, everyone had stopped what they were doing and were staring. Without looking around, Mace stood up and grabbed her arm and started pushing her out of the workout area into the hallway away from everyone else.
“What the hell are you doing?” He asked, pushing her against the wall. “What is wrong with you? Are you trying to get us all killed?”
“You are letting this happen to us! You could stop it! You could call someone and they could find us and instead you are just standing by doing nothing and we have to fight and get, and get raped because you won’t stand up for what is right!” She yelled back at him. And that was it, she had finally said the words. And he just stared at her. “He raped me.” And the tears started flowing and she couldn’t stop them.
Mace looked at her, but she couldn’t look at him. Mace put his arm against the wall as another fighter walked past with a guard so they couldn’t see Jordan. He leaned close once they had passed and said “Listen to me closely! You have to stay strong! You have to do what you are told. You only put yourself at risk by making a scene. You need to calm down! I know that this is a lot to hold onto and not break but you have to. You hear me? I know you can do this better than any other girl here. You can do this. You can beat them.”
“Oh yea, and what about after the fight huh? How am I supposed to stay strong during that?” Jordan said, finally looking at him.
He closed his eyes and shook his head. “Close your eyes and go somewhere else.” He stood up straight with his hands on his hips and motioned towards her room. “Your first fight is tomorrow. There will be a lot of people in the training area and only one ring. You can’t scream out or ask for help. You will be shot immediately. You have to understand. You have to! It isn’t just dangerous for you! It is for all of us, the guards, trainers, and the other girls if you don’t listen. Jordan, do you understand?”
They had reached her room and he had stopped and so did she. She was looking at the ground. “Jordan?”
“Yes, I understand.” She said it very quietly and never looked at him. She walked into the room and closed the door behind her. She didn’t want to see him anymore. She laid down on the bed without taking a shower or anything and she just cried.
