Hope

Searching for hope can be like trying to find a door in the dark. You try to remember the layout of things from the image you remember when there was light, but because you were not anticipating being in the dark, you didn’t take careful notice of your surroundings. When the darkness comes and you want to get out you start wandering, senses straining, arms outstretched, hands tingling, heart pounding not sure of what you will encounter. It is easy to get lost when looking for hope. One misstep can set us on a course that over time gets further and further from the passageway out of the darkness. If we miss the door by one step or by ten, we still miss it and, surrounded in shadow, find ourselves disoriented and in a situation more frightening than where we started. When we feel hopeless, we curl up and hide. We need a guide when we cannot see the way forward. We need someone to help us find the path that leads to hope. We need someone who knows the way and who calls out to us, warning us, encouraging us, and illuminating the way. Don’t retreat. Don’t hide.
