Growing up, it wasn’t ingrained in me to be a caregiver for anyone. But then, neither was the profession of firefighting where I spent twenty years. Throughout those twenty years, I found myself engulfed with fire all around me literally and figuratively. It was not until my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and dementia did I find myself preparing to fight the most challenging fire ever presented to me. This would be an eight-year journey with five of those years being under the same roof experiencing the same fires of life figuratively engulfed by the one. Many lessons were learned during this time including tactical responses as well as lessons about God, love, life, and perseverance to a higher degree. It led me to reminders of how people are put into your life for a reason and how you are never forgotten nor forsaken. It painted a picture of faith in its highest form and a confirmation that God consistently dwells among us, especially amid chaos and confusion. It taught me that yes, JESUS is the sweetest name on earth and one not to be forgotten no matter how the enemy tries. This challenge came with many difficulties that would include resolves found through trial and error, prayerful petitions, and a will to see it through. I share practical applications as well as topics that seemed to stand out during our journey. May “This World and One More” be an invitation to you to experience the only hope we have in this present world, a knowledge and discernment of the “One More.”

About the Book
Referencing a Forrest Gump quote, caregiving for someone with Alzheimer's and/or dementia "is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're going to get." There's sweet times, sour times and everything in between. There are lessons through it all. This book provides insight into a caregiver's journey to hopefully make that of others easier.
About the Author
Roxanne Hack is a retired Captain and 20 year veteran of the Louisville Fire Department. She was a competitive powerlifter for over 25 years. She experienced childbirth for the first time at the age of 46 and later became her mother's primary caregiver after a diagnosis of Alzheimer's and dementia. While her years of Fire Service experiences exclusively taught her about life in numerous ways, the birth of her daughter would become an unexpected revelation followed by yet another seedbed of growth toward sanctification by way of a difficult and arduous journey. Realizing there's no universal recipe for dealing with Alzheimer's and dementia, she learned much through trial and error but most importantly experienced lessons taught by her mother at a time most would think her incapable. She and her teenage daughter Shiloh live in Indiana. She continues to stay in touch with weight lifting, loves mowing and yard work, enjoys trying to figure things out herself when it comes to repairs especially if it saves her money.
