Commitment is the cocoon in which passion and vision are matured. Without it no leader can develop into a Change Agent. Allow me to take a moment and define what I mean by the term “Change Agent.” While some leaders are gifted at “staying the course,” others possess the ability to bring about true transformation. The word “change” does not by itself indicate improvement. To change something without improving it is simply to alter the state of it. Typically, when change is made without improvement being realized, frustration is the result. People need to see that the change will be worth the effort they will have to make and the disruption of their comfort zone. I once served on the staff of a leader who had tremendous motivational abilities, his name was Dr. Al Janney. I was a young college student at the time, home for the holidays. He was a seasoned pastor who took the helm of a ministry deeply in need of revitalization. He once told me, “We don’t make changes around here; we make improvements. If it’s an improvement, we don’t call it a change; we call it what it is, an improvement.” A lesson that I have carried with me through the years. Allow me to say that when I refer to being a Change Agent, I am actually speaking of being an agent of improvement. It has been said, “There is no improvement without change,” and it would be equally true to say that there is no improvement without commitment.

About the Author
David Patrick, Ph.D. has been in full-time ministry since the early 1980’s. He married his high school sweetheart, the former Pamela Gayle Thompson, in 1982. They have been blessed with three children and seven grandchildren. He earned a bachelor’s degree in theology, a master’s in psychology/counseling, and a doctorate in leadership. He lives in Jacksonville, Florida, where he has served as the senior pastor of the East Pointe Church since December 2014. He is also the author of Easter Beans.
