Gombeys are iconic symbols on the island, with the tradition going back to the days of slavery. There are masks, costumes, and drumming. The Gombeys are known to come out on holidays such as Boxing Day, New Year’s Day, Easter, and Bermuda Day with crowds following behind. In addition to competing with one another on the island, they have also performed overseas.
The origins of Bermuda Gombey dancers can be traced to a mix of Afro-Caribbean and Native American influences. All the bodies and faces of the dancers are covered to avoid identification, as slave owners frowned on their slaves participating as Gombeys.
The beat of the drums is what gets the feet and body moving.

This book is designed to show the beauty, ”Thru My Eyes,” my island home Bermuda. Bermuda on a map looks like a dot in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, or some say shaped like a fishhook. Bermuda is Rich in History, in Her people, Historical Buildings, Her beautiful beaches, Sunrises, Sunsets, and beautiful flowers and trees.
About the Author
Laverne Patricia Albuoy was born on the beautiful island of Bermuda, on January 16 th. 1952. She’s the middle girl of five children. With her caring personality, she attended Bermuda College to be a Certified Nursing Assistant spanning more than a decade, caring for the seniors, more than that her passion is taking pictures of her beloved island home. Early morning sun rises to the setting of the same; she can be seen with her, camera, iPad, or iPhone.
Pictures tell stories of footsteps through life. Family gatherings, Flowers, Trees, Ocean, Clouds, Buildings old n new, Weatherworn rocks all tell stories.
