“No, Dad. The people at school were so unkind. I tried to show everyone kindness, but only one person even spoke back to me…and his day was even worse than mine! I tried to be his friend, but he was so sad that he didn’t seem to want me around. What should I do when I treat people kindly, but they don’t want to have anything to do with me?”
“Son, you are not responsible for other people’s kindness- you’re only responsible for your own. You treat others the way you want to be treated…no matter how they treat you! You can be the example for others. Understand?”
“Yes, Sir. I understand.”
“Now, Dutch, I have a surprise for you. We’re going to buy you the new First Sergeant JJ lunchbox you wanted.”
Dutch was very excited, but he was more concerned for the other kid than he was for himself. He had an idea, so he asked his dad, “Can we buy a lunchbox for the kid at school who was having such a bad day, instead? He accidentally ruined his new First Sergeant JJ tee shirt. His mom is going to be mad at him.”
“That’s a very kind gesture, Son,” Dutch’s dad said with pride, "We’ll see how much they cost, and we might just do that!”

About the Book
Dutch has a dreadful first day of Kindergarten, but he does his best to show kindness to others. He feels like his efforts were in vain, but a surprise encounter and interaction at a store assures him that he was right to have chosen kindness all day, even as others chose otherwise.
About the Author
Having served in the military as well as having worked in elementary education for approximately fifteen years, Dusty has encountered many methods for teaching important skills and concepts. He uses his experience and love for storytelling to impact our future by teaching tenets of character education.
