What are the qualities, characteristics, components that define or encompass being a person or personhood? While God exists as three distinct Persons, each of whom is totally, wholly, Deity, each has these characteristics or components which define their personhood. At least eight of these can be expressed: life, intelligence, purpose, activity, freedom, self-consciousness, emotion, spirituality (intangibility), volition. Note, there is no mention of a corporeal body. Personhood does not require a body which then responds in some way to these characteristics. God the Father and the Holy Spirit do not have bodies, while God the Son took upon himself a human body at the incarnation in Mary and remains in bodily form for all eternity. God is not merely a concept, a force of energy, a power, or the combination of everything as pantheism suggests. God is a person who lives, thinks, acts with purpose and will; a person who sees, hears, speaks, loves, is angry, blesses people, judges people. Because God is a person, we can talk to him and know that he hears us. We can tell him about the things that are occurring and know that he understands. Because God is a person, we can ask him to help us with that which we are experiencing. Because God is a person we can trust him, know him, love him, worship him, serve him . For millennia mankind has tried to do this with statues/idols they have made, but none of them has been able to respond, because they are not persons. They are only pieces of wood, stone, metal that have been shaped into an image. They are not persons; only inanimate objects. God, however, is a person and responds to all He sees, hears, and knows.

God made and placed man on the earth so that man would not only have a cognitive, “head,” knowledge of Him but also a “heart” relationship with him. He wanted man to know him objectively and intimately and has given mankind everything needed for that to be a reality. God wants us to not only know that he loves us, but he wants us to love him back! The more that we know about him, the more we will love him! An essential part of that knowledge of God is that He is the Triune God: the Trinity. How well do we understand this truth? How do the three persons of the Godhead interrelate to one another? What does each do in our lives that only He can do? In this deductive study of God (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) we look first at those truths that belong corporately to each Person of the Godhead. Then, we individually look at those characteristics, qualities, attributes, and works that are specific to each one. Throughout we will progressively see who this One is; who is our Father, our Savior, our Comforter and the depth of the relationship we are to have with Him.
