Losing someone you love is like being dropped in the churning ocean during a hurricane. These waves overpower you with force and take the air right out of you. Every thought of how many times and places you will no longer see your loved one by your side, and each memory are other waves that want to sink you. You can’t breathe. You can’t think.
Then as time goes on, you still get pummeled by the next wave, yet you realize it’s a little less overwhelming than the previous wave of grief. Now it’s a sixty-foot wave. Then the next one is thirty feet and then fifteen feet high. At some point, your desire to live and need to be at peace whispers (or screams!) in your ears. You come to the realization that without a lifeboat or something to hold onto, you will sink and drown in despair. You need a lifeboat.Some things you cling to are sturdy. They will hold you for a good while before they sink. Other things are flimsy. They will keep you afloat temporarily. Only you know what these things are in your life.
This book will find you in the ocean of your pain and sorrow and bring you inside the breakwater, where you will find moorings that gently assist you onto the dry ground. If you are early on in your grief journey, reading this may be your first step in finding a lifeboat. You will see land even while you are at the mercy of the current and before reaching the shore, which will make you aware that you have survived through the initial waves of grief. God, through His grace, will eventually move you to the shore.
