Bittersweet Giving
FOLLOW THE LIGHT TO BLESSING
Once I saw a TV program that featured research involving three separate children around the age of ten, who were the son or daughter of three different single mothers. Individually, each child was given a very desirable toy. After expressing their delight with the gift, they were offered a lovely piece of jewelry which they could give to their mom. All eagerly accepted the gift for their mother.
Then, they were informed they could only have one of the two gifts. You could see the inner struggle on each child’s face, one to the point of tears. Even so, every child chose the gift for their mother, rather than keeping their toy. When each mother was told of the sacrifice her child had made for her, they were overwhelmed with bittersweet emotion and so were the children. These children knew how to give sacrificially, because they had seen it in the examples of their mothers. They had witnessed the unselfishness of their mothers’ love every day.
As Christians, we know about this kind of love. We have experienced the sacrificial giving of Christ. His birth, His life, His death, and His resurrection reveal the depth of His willingness to surrender His rights for our salvation.
May His example move us to exhibit selfless love to others. May we commit acts of love that do not demand credit or have any strings attached. If you are the recipient of bittersweet giving this Christmas, you are blessed. If you are the giver, you are blessed most of all; because, being loved may make you happy, but giving love will bring you joy.
“Therefore, be imitators of God as dear children. And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God ...” Ephesians 5:1,2 NKJV
Individual Activity: This Christmas season give sacrificially to someone else. It may cost you time, money, and/or effort. Consider how giving impacted you.
Family Activity: Name some unselfish acts people in your family do for each other. Plan to do something thoughtful for someone else this Christmas season.
