When she got to the tree, she leaned against it heavily. She had to catch her breath and the lee of the tree made it possible to escape a bit of the wind. She waited a few minutes before she saw another shape through the snow coming towards her from the direction of town. BRAD, she thought, why that snake was following her. Probably he was hoping to find her dead in the snow, so he could have her last thirty-four cents! Such a devious and hateful family, why she couldn’t believe they even had the nerve to show their faces in church on Sunday. Why God allow people like that to claim to be Christian are beyond me, she thought.
Although she wasn’t fully rested, she once again began to trudge through the snow towards where she knew the woods lie. Once there, she was sure that the trees would provide her some protection from the wind and snow, and she would be able to easily get home from there. Her pace slowed, and each footfall became more difficult. The snow seemed to get higher with every small step. All at once, she felt herself falling, and she was unable to catch herself. Into the snow, she went, right down out of sight. She tried to regain her footing but it was not possible. She simply didn’t have the energy. Perhaps, if she just slept here for a little while, she thought. It seemed warm here. The snow around her was as though a warm blanket was over her. Yes, just a little rest, and then she would be fine. As she drifted off, she thought she saw her father hovering above her. "Daddy?" she called in an almost inaudible voice, and then she drifted off into a dark sleep.
Chapter 10
When Judy became aware again, she could hear distant sounds. Her eyes remained closed as her head tried to make sense of what she was hearing. The sounds and smells were familiar, yet strange at the same time. The smells were comforting, and yet also alarming. She began to open her eyes, and her head began to throb. She immediately recognized the fireplace hearth of her home, but how had she gotten herself here. Last she remembered, she was a long walk from home, and it was snowing. Yes, the blizzard. She then became aware of hearing the wind howling outside her cabin, as her eyes closed again and she drifted off into another round of unconsciousness.

About the Author
Mrs. Whittemore grew up in the beautiful state of Maine, and currently resides in a charming town located on the coast in the “down east” portion of the state. She is married to the love of her life, and lives with him and a menagerie of dogs and cats. She ran her own farm that she loved dearly. She attended the University of Maine and Beal College and a member of the Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance, and worked for many years in the medical field before retiring. Writing has always been a lifelong obsession and passion, and she has written many short stories and books. This book is her first published work.
